Climate Control Bypass 78 300CD With manual push pull cables and knobs

Yanked out the push button CC system.
Rerouted the heater hoses through a push pull cable valve.
Installed a 7 position rotary switch to the heater blower resister.
Installed a temperature control and "on Off"switch into the AC circuit.
Replaced door flap vacuum actuators with manual push pull cables to all of the HVAC ducts
(fabricated levers and brackets from aluminum stock for cable function)
Made new panel front plates, laminated with walnut burl-wood over stainless sheet metal.
Fabricated and polished push pull knobs from Stainless carriage bolts nuts and Tiger Iron stone.
"D" operates Defrost and front vents.
"F" operates upper and lower vents.
"H" operates heater valve.
"A" controls outside air.
" Large turn knob" controls blower motor.
"Smaller turn knob" controls AC temperature.
Never liked the Mercedes Climate Control system even when it did work.

Very cool ..... no pun intended...
Just the pushbutton part of the type 2 and 3 troubleshooting section in the FSM is 80 serious pages long... it will boggle your mind... so you have none of that to worry about.

Yours is the cleanest looking re-do of the MB auto CC I have seen.
You did a great job.
It is now a manual system, that is what all 240D`s came with.

The W123`s were a high end luxury car of their time, and we couldn`t have
the American public fiddling around trying to work the AC/CC system now could we?
They want everything quick easy, just a push of the button.
Like instant mashed potatoes. LOL

I assume the 78 300CD has the Evil Servo, a Chrysler invention that MB adapted to these cars.
A really complicated system.

Thanks!
Yes it did have the Servo switch.
I know what you mean. I took it apart just to see how it works.
This is my wife's car, and she is not yet quite familiar with the manual knobs.

There are a few guys that pulled the whole AC/CC box out of a 240 and installed it into a 300D.
More work than what you did. But just 2 knobs for heat, (pass side and drivers side)
one for the Blower and a slider for floor/defrost.

There is one vac pod, and maybe 82/83 they have two pods.

I have about 4 units I pulled from a few 240`s with that intention.
They are around $60 for the complete unit.
This weekend it is 50% off, Wed to Mon at PNP.

I have never had a car with the Evil Servo, so no experience. I have
seen a few 300D NA for a good price, but when I think of the Servo....
Ahhhhh NO.

my 77 240 D has that AC unit too, still working good.
Constantly had to replace power window switches in those cars ($55 each)
I ended up tossing out the power window switches and putting in some $3 12V DC Polarity Reversing Momentary Rocker switches that haven't failed 3 years and still going.

The window switches usually last a long time.

Here is a DIY on repairing them.

PeachPartsWiki: How to Refurbish Mercedes Switches

I grab the switches when ever Iam in a PNP. Sometimes you can find new one`s.

Power window switches

Thank you Charlie,
I am done dealing with these MB switches.
New ones, old original ones, cheap ones, expensive original ones,
constantly repairing them. within 1 or 2 month they fail.

So here is what worked for me on all 3 of our 123s
no failures 3 years now still going
3 dollar switches with LED lights too.
was able to get some pictures this morning.
