I assumed that ' off the shelf ' units do... I was just mentioning it in case someone was going to brew their own... would hate for it to drain the battery the first night it was hooked up...

One issue with the current solar power technology is heat they require some cooling to be efficient mounting the panel using standoffs provides some air circulation but in a confined space the efficiency drops. A cool panel on a bright day is designed to put out just shy of 18 volts as the panel self heats the voltage drops so a nominal 12 volt panel can put out less than the required 13 volts a battery likes to charge. It's a real shame the nano solar technology factory's went bankrupt attempting to commerialize them otherwise the would be a real consideration. Couple nano panels with super capacitors and the OP would have some bragging rights.

No, the panels are non-conductive unless they are producing. I took a solar system course and the instructor shut a panel down by putting a glove on it. Neat trick.

Blocking and By-Pass Diodes Used in Solar Panels

""However, in the dark, when no voltage is being produced by the panels, the voltage of the battery would cause a current to flow in the opposite direction through the panels, discharging the battery, if it was not for the blocking diode in the circuit.
Blocking diodes will be of benefit in any system using solar panels to charge a battery. Blocking diodes are usually included in the construction of solar panels so further blocking diodes are not required."""

Just going by what I have read over the years....
