VERY VERY VERY OLD BENZ

No slide name set - Driving the world's first car - CNNMoney

That ran on diesel fuel

One of my pet peeves. It was 100 years (or so) late to be the first car - look up Cugnot. Might be the first internal combustion powered car, however. The Germans just HATE that the French beat them to it. Not sure about the Durea (sp?) brothers and other possible contenders.

That's really cool! Imagine being the guy building that, filing those patents, and outlaying that money? Must have taken some guts. I wonder what he envisioned would be the future of the automobile?

The article mentioned that the driven car was a replica. This must be one of the (fifty?) replicas made by DB some years ago. They sold for around $50,000 or so I was told. A dealer in Sacramento, Cal. I once visited had one. OTOH, the Mercedes museum in Germany has an original. I suppose that's the one they copied to build the replicas. I keep bugging the local dealer to track one down. They must show up in the auction market occasionally.

Was also going to say that. It's certainly the first one to be made and sold to the public. Samuel Brown is the one I remember, an English Gentleman who built an internal-combustion engine car in about 1820.

Could it be that Benz was the first 4-cycle engine in a modern car?

leathermang 11-27-2015 01:42 PM

Who Invented the Car?

Musta missed your answer. Did that thing run on diesel?
:D;)

leathermang 11-27-2015 01:51 PM

The title did not say it was Diesel...
if you have a complaint then ask VStech to delete the thread... I can not do that..

Mölyapina 11-27-2015 01:58 PM

Ehh, I think it's absolutely fine... if we strictly adhered to an "only Mercedes diesel" rule here in DD, a lot of good threads would not be, such as the VW diesel one that Joe has been commenting in a bunch... but not complaining about.

leathermang 11-27-2015 02:06 PM

If Benz had not had success with that machine he probably would not have been in the position to make Diesels later...

Siegfried Marcus would have had the best claim, but most of the records were destroyed by the Nazis.
