I hope we can keep the $80,000 out of TXBill's hands - he's gonna corner the valuable diesel MB supply and ruin it for the rest of us. I have visions of "TXBill" as the high bidder on every single 240D/300D on EBay. A crude oil pump slowly moving UP and DOWN in his back yard. Bio-diesel additives gracefully aging in vats in the shed.
All of you should know that diesel cars are noisy, smelly, dangerously underpowered, and there have been cases of diesel MB driver's getting cancer. Do not buy them. Do not bid on them on EBay. Ken300D |

I think blackmercedes said it best. Although Jag has improved, I still wouldn't buy one over a Benz.
BTW: WHAT IS THIS THREAD DOING IN THE DIESEL DISCUSSION FORUM??????????????????????????? Have a great day, |

80k of mad money for a vehicle? For me it would definitely have to be a 2002 G400 CDI SWB.
A diesel 4x4 with 250 hp, 0-60 in 9.5 secs, the answer to all of my questions. No thanks on the Jag. Had a Discovery and a D90. Learned the hard way about British electricals. Steven |

If our country ever decides to produce ultra low sulfur diesel, then perhaps Mercedes Benz would start importing their wonderful vehicles with 270 CDI 5 cylinder and 400 CDI 8 cylinder motors.

XN6Guy is right on the money in his financial speak regarding money and cars. Unless you get REALLY lucky in which case it would be an accidental investment that pays off, a car is an EXPENSE. If you think of it as an investment your portfolio start taking some serious hits.

With $80K, why not just import a MB diesel of your choice from Germany and have it retrofitted to meet smog specifications?

Mercedes Man,
My thoughts exactly. Regarding G Wagens, I know that EPA/DOT federalization for a new W463 costs roughly $15K and the process takes about 6 months. In addition to this however, the quality of our fuel must be on par with European diesel for these super high tech engines to perform optimally. As of right now, our diesel is nowhere close in comparison. By the way, I think this has to be one of the most imformative forums on the net. A true priviledge to be here. Regards, Steven |

A Benz. A Jag would only mean more expenses to be reserved for repairs.

interesting discussion
If I didn't have to spend the entire $80K, I'd get a Series III Vanden Plas, keep my 300D, and get a '76 450slc Euro model and maybe throw in an E500.
If not, then perhaps I would put a down payment on a Bentley Arnage T or R :p

Nello, I agree that the Series III VDP is a great car. The 1987 was the last model turned out under Brit ownership. Maybe there was an expression of pride there, because that car is solid, drives like a dream and is the last year to use that tremendous straight six. End of an era. |

Jags are nice
I took a risk on the 94 XJ12 and had normal repairs until now it drives perfectly.
Low to the ground, fast, nice power curve. Also gets the looks even 8 years old! Seating a bit crampy compared to the amazing 97 S600 coupe we just bought. The front adjustable seats are super for a large guy or anyone really. But somehow I like that low lean look. I am having a real problem deciding which beast I like best. The fit and finish of the Benz seems better. The Jag has the clearcoat coming off in places. Interior is quite nice; leather may not hold out as long as an MB. Handling is very nice on the Jag, the MB seems over assisted w' slightly mushy brakes. Trunk on the MB beats the Jag big time. Lots of toys on the Jag dash. The MB has the basic console of the 90 300E. Both are great! |
