Anyone else can chime in for 78-80 300SD... I've noticed many of them are for sale lately, are parts plentiful such as OEM parts coming from Pelican parts?

I'm keeping an open mind here as an matter of fact, I saw an member with 1,345,000 miles 78 300SD that really impressed me. 300SD have potential to survive this long.
W116 is a dependable chassis. Like I said earlier, I think they handle better than the w126 in stock form. I like the big classic look of them that you don't get with the w126. But as folks mentioned, the evil servo climate control can be an issue. However, there is an aftermarket replacement fix for it if you are so inclined. Used parts are dwindling fast. So they are not as plentiful as the w126 chassis. If I were to get one, I would be looking for the 1978-1979 models without the emissions equipment.
As far as mileage, I think the 300sd w126 can also be a million mile car if taken care of properly.

There was a guy on here parting one with 667k because of rust and another fellow who was doing an engine replacement at 750k.

W126! Here are links:

The 667k one (actually 668k). He ran it to 680k and then parted it out not because it died, but just because he was unable to sell it.
The 750k one (actually 728k).
Some dude on Benzworld who claims 667k miles.

Also, here's a guy doing something totally different with a W116 . This thread cracks me up every time:

super clean all kustom w116 300sd manual transmission conversion project!!!

WOW! Fantastic read! Now I'm becoming much more motivated with this forum, thanks goes to all of you guys.

W126 is my goal, thank you so much. I see so many of those W126's on Ebay, Craiglist in Texas where my best friend lives... Austin to be exact but he is more than willing to help me out.

As for W116, I would buy if I find a decent one and buy and have the climate control unit as an back up. So far no luck here in Florida. few on evilbay... (Ebay)

I will wait a bit until after Christmas/Holidays to be done with and sell one of those Mustang then the search will begin ...

As time permits, test drive every MB Diesel for sale in your area and keep notes of each experience. Build a sense of what feels right and what doesn't. Definitely drive an SDL before committing yourself to an SD.

Will do! Many thanks everyone once again. There are no SDL nearby that's for sale..... few SDL's are at least 4 hours away. I've rode in my grandfather's 84 300SD on daily basis, I do remember what it feels like.

Drove the 1976 240D without grandfather's permission when I was 11 because the car got ticketed for parking on same spot for so long, I moved it around to stop the ticketing. It was fun. It was interesting how glow plug light works.... before cranking her up.

I was beyond devasted. Anyway to the point... I am actively seeking for one to obtain and enjoy and restore and rack the miles out of it.

Right now I have an 2011 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI. She is a great car as she is racking up to 199,800 miles as of right now.... but never can replace the famous W126 body and its diesel rumbling and clacking sounds.

What is the best W126 to obtain? Year? Etc what to look out and what to avoid.

I enjoy cars, i own 2 of 1989 ford Mustang 5.0's. One is a police package coupe which is quite fast and an GT. Slowly restoring them.
1981/82/83 is what I'd be looking for.

Decided not to buy one of those due to dry rotten tires, it could be a big can of worms hidden somewhere.
