240d flywheel bolt

are the 240d flywheel bolts regular 12 point metric or or that some other type of exotic fastener? my 12mm 12 pt feels a little loose on it and i don't want to accidentally machine off anything....
thx

Hey Hogweed -
Seems like I used my 12 point 12mm on mine but it was a while ago. I don't have any special gizmo in my toolbox so it WAS something standard and I'm pretty sure that's what I used. I remember using the impact on them w/o issue. I have a fuzzy memory of buying a new socket for that just to be sure my old one wasn't worn out. Either way, it worked.

Be sure to mark the flywheel's relative location to the crankshaft (assuming it'll go back on that 616). Some are reputed to be match-balanced and might not be marked. Mine went on my 617 so it was sort of a moot point. BTW - I just bolted mine on the 5 cylinder and everything was balanced just fine but I guess others have had different results.

Do the bolts have a reduced height head?

If so, you should grind the chamfer off the socket. Some sockets have a significant amount of chamfer that reduces socket to bolt head engagement. In fact, I grind off the chamfer on all of my sockets even for regular bolts. When a bolt head is rusted, it is usually at the top, a socket with a heavy chamfer doesn't grip a the base of the head so you are left with a very narrow band of grip.

And, as the sockets wear, grind off more to access a less worn spot.

I went back to my build thread (I'm Back. S-10 OM617 Project). The bolt heads are, in fact, 12mm 12 point. Check Page 7 of my build thread for details - that's where I installed the flywheel and clutch assembly (which works perfectly, BTW).

I agree that too much starting chamfer on your socket can be an issue. I don't grind my Snap-Ons but they'll replace them if they're loose. I will, however, grind any of my cheapies if I think it'll help - and have. Worth a try.

I'm still puzzled at the 40mm Torx being a tad loose on the pressure plate bolts - a darn mystery!

FYI, all 61X motors, (615, 616, 617), both turbo and nonturbo, have the potential to need balancing. If there is a mark on the crank matching the flywheel to it, then it definitely needs to be match-balanced; if not, you should still check it, because the mark can be really hard to see sometimes. People have seriously screwed up projects/motors by not balancing flywheels...

EDIT: @Hogweed: Of course you know this, just leaving this here as a warning to future readers.
