I've read on windshield threads here that the genuine MB seals for w123 vintage cars are problematic - because they are simply OLD - sitting on the shelf for 15-20 years or more. Contrary to almost every other part scenario, some people have better luck with the new aftermarket seals, because they are a newer material.

Anybody have thoughts on that? I'm considering getting new seals for both rear and front - and having safelight do an install.

Over the last 3-4 years I have used genuine MBZ seals for both front and rear windows on my W123 cars with great results. The seals were fresh from the Classic Center. I have not had great results with after market seals as the bright trim would not fit properly.

Post Glass Grommets

No ;

They are NEVER old , it's a popular part and always turning over the stock .

I use only M-B factory grommets from The Classic Center .

I once received an old pitted windshield rubber seal from the Classic Center in Irvine.

Now I make sure they check it before they ship it.

I just ordered two rubber seals from the MB Classic Center in Irvine.
I asked them to check it carefully before shipping.
They do have some old seals on there shelves

Stick with the Genuine rubber seal if in good condition

A few years ago shelf life of MB w123 seals was an issue. It was reported that MB w123 seals did not last that long after being installed and often came twisted from the dealer.

Perhaps now it's different because some folks have reported that some of the MB seals have made in the USA mark on them.

On another note, This company (Precision Parts) has supplied various glass installer companies and they offer a front and rear w123 seal. Some here have reported it is a good seal buy.

Looked like crap, trims were bent and it leaked. Had to go back twice and each time they injected Urethane in an attempt to stop the leak, which was never totally leak free. At the time I did not read up on the FSM procedure and just placed my trust in Safelite which was a mistake. Find a shop with experience on the particular windshield for your car and quiz them before you let them touch your car.
On the topic of Safelite, I hate those folks working on a w123. I had a safelite windshield installed and when I removed the glass to replace it myself, it was a b*tch to take out. They love using urethane adhesive. Which I think is a no-no on a w123. Do it right and use putty not urethane on the seal so the windshield be replaced easily and the pinchwelds can be cleaned nicely.
