During my water pump adventure, I noticed that END the brown colored plastic hollow tube that goes into the EGR valve looks like it's been melted into a pointy shape.

I've heard about the BB trick. Would melting the end of the tube shut be doing the same thing?

Yes, as long as the tube is sealed and the EGR valve gets ZERO vacuum. I'd double check it.
