WTB - starter brushes 1981 300sd

Pelican does not seem to have them. Where do I get brushes?

Thx.

If the starter isn't clicking, the problem is more likely with the solenoid than worn brushes.

Six - I thought if it was clicking, it was the solenoid. I get zero sound like the NSS thinks it is in gear. Been tapping the starter with a broomstick for a few days and it would start fine, then yesterday tap, tap, tap and nothing.

No sound. Nothing.

The brushes for $16.99; is that the right set?

The brushes probably are worn, but it's not why the solenoid isn't clicking. All the brushes do is energize the motor windings. The solenoid is either bad, or the wiring, nss, ignition switch, or maybe a relay somewhere is bad...

Have you shorted the screws under the terminal strip in front of the battery?

tyl604 12-18-2015 09:00 AM

Have not. Which screws? Assume put key in on position, then short and try to make starter function?

For my year and model Mrecedes part number A 000 151 81 14 Brush Set usually the "A" is not used and sometimes the part number is condensed 0001518114 (2 007 014 065 Bosch Number)
Part BOSCH 2 007 014 065 (2007014065), Carbon Brush, starter analog, prices and availability - FindPart.org for more part numbers

The Bosch part numbered brushes show up on eBay once in a While.

There is a couple of Starter Rebuild threads that also have parts info in the Repair Links:

At the wiring block -- on my w123 it's on the passenger side rear inner fender, rear of shock tower. May have a black plastic cover or it may be long gone, careful removing or you won't have one after.

From memory it's the first two (from front of car) you bridge.

You are going to have alternator and starter repair places in your area. They will probably sell you a set. I am just responding to your question without any suggestions about the starter otherwise.

If you look at the area in front of the battery area, there is a bundle of wires at a junction block. Two big screws and a small one. Either big screw jumped to the small one will engage your starter, key in any position, even in your pocket...

If this works, you have a ignition switch or NSS switch problem. However, if you try putting the car in neutral, and it works, it could be as simple as worn shifter rod bushings...

VS - thanks. Will try when it gets light.

tyl604 12-23-2015 02:29 PM

Unbelievable. I went out to try the jump scenario but I tried the starter first. No luck. Then I tried your suggestion about turning the key on and moving the shifter slowly around Neutral. Sure enough I found a point where the starter engaged and it actually started without doing any preglow.

So sure enough it must be the bushings. So when Christmas is past and it stops raining in Atlanta, I will jack it up and put in new bushings.
