The trans is going behind a turbo 617. In order to repair the broken speedo mount properly, I need to take the rear case off the trans. I do have the haynes manual and it says to remove the front case first, so I might as well get a gasket kit and at least give it a good check while I am in there. If I didn't have to do the speedo repair I would probably leave it alone, the trans feels ok. I would like to have a working speedo though!

The top right mount is for a 240D wit a manual trans.
The top left mount is for a 240D with automatic trans. Will fit the 280E also.

The bottom left looks like the one above but can`t tell for sure.

So for a 4-spd swap into your 300D, use the top left one.

Charlie, thanks that helps me out. The 2 on the left are the same mount. I wonder what the middle one is for then.

I spent a few hours today making a tool to take the drive flange off the trans. I found 3 junker 1 1/4" sockets in my drawer so I used one. I needed a deep socket, so I just welded a chunk of scrap on the end and turned it to size, bored it out and milled the 4 drive keys.

It's not pretty but it should do the trick. If someone else needs this tool after I am done with it I would be happy to loan it out.

Beautiful job on that Socket. Wish I had learned how to run a lathe back in my younger days.

I made one of those Sockets with my air powered cut off wheel, wasn`t pretty, but did the job.

I have no idea what car the parts/trans came out of, other than it was a 240. He couldn't tell me the year and certainly couldn't tell me the condition of the driver seat. He did say he thought it had 220k on it. That is the extent of the info I received.

I find it strange that the auto rebuild kits are plentiful, but a manual one is nowhere to be found. What gives? Didn't think it would be this hard to find. So people just slap em in the vehicle and hope for the best?

I have to remove the back portion of the trans anyways to fix the speedometer mount

I have called around to a ton of yards, even ones out of state. I haven't found one manual trans for sale, except the one I have now. Not sure finding one with significantly less miles is going to happen. Plus I would probably pay a lot more for a new trans than to just rebuild it and make gaskets myself. Not the end of the world.

I did locate the damper bushing I was looking for, $22 bucks from the dealer(good god, its the size of a pencil eraser).
The part you mentioned above started with a 115, which means it's from the earlier generation of 220-250-280 cars.

Have you broadened your search to look for iron boxes from those cars?

Sometimes going to a tranny shop or calling the MB classic center may help.

you could sell those, I would buy one since it will be a couple years before I am ready to do work like this and I may move!
