The fuel just sits in the cylinder and on the walls until the compression stroke and ignites, albeit very inefficiently.

Normally fuel is injected on the POWER stroke.
360 degrees (crankshaft) or 180 (pump) has the fuel being injected on the INTAKE stroke.

If the fuel were injected on the exhaust stroke, it is unlikely that enough would be available to produce sufficient power to drive the car.

Actually the exhaust stroke is 180 degrees off the compression stroke, no?

So, I'm trying to understand the possible consequences, component-wise of driving an E300D with the IP out of sync 180 degrees.. and perhaps as many as 900-1000 miles.

Someone mentioned changing the oil, as fuel is likely to get in the oil, seeping past the cylinder rings.

Because of all the smoke, could there be a catalytic converter issue?

I've ran 3 pints of Diesel Purge through the car.

A Cat.-Converter on a Petrol/Gasoline fired vehicle will seriously overheat and be damaged by an engine firing with one spark-plug faulty, the gas burns in the converter overheating it...

Whether the device, (IF its actually a Cat Converter etc) would be damaged on a Diesel is something I'm not sure of, but suspect its possible....

I'm talking crank degrees. Each stroke lasts 180 degrees. Two revolutions for all 4 strokes.

Is your delivery valve broken or just missing? How in the world do you break a DV?

I have a bunch of stock internal pump parts. Let me know the exact part you need.

I'll bet the pre-chambers and cylinders are seriously carboned up, which may take quite a bit of driving to clear up. Italian tune-ups are your new friend!

Idle control is electronic, so if the engine wiring harness is suspect, that may be part of your issue.

How does the car run otherwise? Decent power? Rough at speeds above idle?
