I looked for quite a while for a good 210 in the midwest. i am convinced such a thing does not exist. If its not windy, and you listen really carefully, you actually can hear rust form on a 210 in Wisconsin.

Get a W211
Get an 05 E320 CDI. Worlds apart and really not that much more money than a 210. The plastic fuel parts on the 210 are worth not getting it for. Those things just suck!

Are you getting any insurance money on the deal? That could give you more options here dealing with the old car.
Yes, they are accessing the damages now, looks like it will total out

1983 , 244 K miles, you are likely to get ~ $ 1,500 and coverage rates on your next car will probably go up as a result. Comp insurance on an older car isn't worth it. |

the 300TDT om606 turbo is a solid option, and both the 98 and 99 i have are excellent cars.
one huge advantage of the om606 equipped w210 vs w211 is that you will always, no matter what happens to the car, get money out of the engine and parts from it. and if the electronics decides to be a *****, that is "somewhat" easy to fix to. swap the injectionpump for an electronic, and the gearboxcontroller from Danish guy OleFejer will controll the strong 722.6 gearbox plug&play. New 722.6 Gearbox in you old Car | Mercedes-Benz turbo not perhaps what you was asking for, but imo the w210 and that particular engine+gearbox combo has some huge advantage over the later diesels, especially since maintaining the 300tdt is a whole other story than the 320cdi. atleast over here in sweden the om606 plays in a totaly different leauge relaibility wise.

Sounds like a great buy assuming everything works and mileage is not too high.
Despite all that has been said, our 98 E320 is still in great shape and has had very few problems since we bought it in 2001. This despite being in Canada where cars do rust if not looked after. Like many cars here, our E320 has had rust treatment since we bought it. And if we see the start of any rust, we touch it up or have it repaired. Most of known problems (Spring perches, under door seals, trunk lid, engine cross brace) were dealt with under warranty or good will. Since then, we have only had rust on one front wheel well and around sun roof. Both properly repaired at reasonable cost. Rust problems no worse than other cars. In fact, our 85 300D was much worse. Only real problem that I could not fix myself, is the A/C evaporator. Considered pulling dash apart, but decided we don't need A/C for this car.

The car is in great condition, could not have found a better car anywhere because it is owned by a Mercedes Benz Indy Repair shop owner's wife. Has a new head, all rubber underneath replaced, all fuel lines, injectors and glow plugs replaced, new lower ball joints, new water pump and thermostat and brand new Michelin tires all the way around. The owner and his son are great, he is a good and honest man. I have owned over 30 Mercedes in my life and by far this is the best one I've ever purchased, everything works flawlessly!.... They gave me a detailed service history print out of the last 5 years and almost $5,000 was spent on the car and they did all the work...... Checkout the pics!!...... Once again, thank all of you for your advice on the reliability and drive-ability of these cars!...... oh yeah, it has 211,000 miles on it..... There are brand new floor mats in the trunk still in the plastic...... EVERYTHING works flawlessly...... I actually sat down with the Indy Shop owner who has been repairing Benz's and Bentleys for over 41 years..... He gave me a wealth of knowledge about the car, introduced me to his son, who now runs the shop with him, and told me that if I bring it back for an oil change, he will set up an appointment for his detail guy to come out and perform a $150.00 detail over the entire car with no charge to me..... This Indy also owns a body shop...... His son told me that if anything goes wrong with the car, even down the road, send it to him for repairs and he'll take care of me because I purchased it from his family!!!...... WOW!!!..... I had extra money that I was saving to buy a CDI in March so that's what I used to purchase this vehicle until my insurance company settles my claim...... Have had my eye on a CDI for 6.9K that looks in great shape...... I still have my 2002 ML500 sports edition, my wife's 1995 E320 wagon and now the diesel I just bought..... Sold my 1983 300SD and a 1987 300E in the last few days because we were running out of room in my driveway.... I practically gave them away just to pass on the good feeling I got from buying this diesel!....... I got the 1999 E300D for just under $4,000!

What did the insurance pay for the damaged car?
They are still assessing it..... I went out and spent my own money until the insurance company concludes, it's going on 3 weeks..... They're saying that because the 86 300sdl was in such great condition (not a ding on the body anywhere, paint was almost flawless) that they're having difficulty calculating a value..... My gut says they'll total for 5K
