617 in 240D engine shock questions

Hello, I'm planning on swapping a 1985 617 turbo into my 1983 240D. I'm wondering what those who have done this did with the engine shocks.

The engine ran super smoothly with almost no vibration when in the 300D and both engine shocks were completely gone. I noticed that in order to install the the shock on passenger side of the 240D, I'd have to fabricate a bracket on the cross member, not sure about the driver side yet.

Those that did the swap, did you install new engine shocks? Just install one? If they were totally blown in the 300D do I really need them on the 240?

Photos of the orignal equipment Benz W123 motor mounts w/engine shocks for an OM617 Turbo as installed in a 300D.

These motor mount shocks and cushions are such a PITA to install that I would use new in any engine swap.

If I put them back in I'll definitely go with new. Having another look at the crossmembers of the two vehicles it looks like the one on the driver side will just bolt up. However the one on the passenger side will either need:

1. Be left off
2. A bracket fabricated

Perhaps there is a motor mount for the passenger side where the shock is located behind the mount as on the driver side. Looks like there is a hole on the cross member to mount the shock were it on the rear of the mount.

300D passenger side cross member where shock was mounted to forward side of cross member:

240D passenger side where forward mount for shock is non existent:

Some people have said the Engine Shock mostly works right after the Engine is shut off. As the Engine jerks back and forth considerably right after shutoff.

Ditto. People say it was for the "shutdown transient". You obviously don't need them since your engine ran smooth without them. I think they were an act of irrational exuberance by M-B engineers. To that list add: steering damper, aux water pump, oil cooler, ...

Thanks for the input! I'm feeling comfortable about not installing them at this point. Worst case scenario, I end up adding the driver side at some point after the swap if I feel the shutdown shaking is excessive.

All 3 of those things are important and add something to the car that is needed...

No the shocks are not critical, but the banging jarring at start up and shutdown is eliminated with good shocks. It's much more of a refined feeling, which us what these cars were engineered for.

I just ordered the shock for one side. Shock mount + shock + mounting kit = $200. That's about half the amount I paid for the 300D

That Shock Mount is a pricy little bugger isn`t it?

There is a thread floating around where the old rubber was dug out and then filled with Urathane.
Much cheaper.

MACH4 used it to fill his engine mounts so they don`t collapse.

EDIT: Found some info

Homemade Polyurethane Engine Mounts - bushings

Cheap engine shock mounts fix

w123 engine mounts - drivers' side is squished way down despite being brand new

I fixed one by scraping off the old brittle rubber and filling w/ PL1 black polyurethane caulk - for gutters at Home Depot. Others use it to fill engine mounts, which I also did for my 300D's. Previously, I fixed one shock top w/ fiberglass & epoxy but it later separated, but probably my fault from lifting the engine to install a mount and forgot to unscrew the shock damper.

I sure wouldn't pay $200 for a new one, and have bag of extra engine shocks from PickNPull. But, unlike Mannys, I don't see my life materially improved by the engine shock.

I probably have an extra shock mount somewhere. I put one on mine when I put the 617 in the 240. It really does not need it I think, but putting the one in on the drivers side was easy, so it is in there. What are you going to use for a pilot bearing seeing that you are using an 85 engine.

-junqueyardjim That's an excellent question. I didn't realize the inner diameter of the crank on the 85's were different from every other year until after reading your last post.

Looks like I've got some more research to do. On the bright side, I've snagged a ton of parts from this thing and definitely think I still made a good investment buying this parts car.

I think I just found a bearing for some Suzuki application which claims to have dimensions of 15X34X11. Ordered it
09262-15014 B1 15X34X11 BEA $13.80.

I suppose my other option is to fabricate some sort of shim for 32mm outer diameter bearing and then fit the whole apparatus into the crank shaft.

Have you tested engine start up and shut down with and without good shock(s) installed?

Not rigorously. I suggest you perform a blind test having an assistant randomly unbolt both engine shocks and you record your feeling of the shut-down transient on a severity scale. You must do it ~100 times to get valid statistics. Then compare the with and without to see if a statistical correlation. Shouldn't take more that 2 man-weeks labor. Please report back. People used to try calling audiophiles on their claim perceptions of different speaker and cables, by blind tests, but most wouldn't step up to show their superior perceptions.

I have two W123 300D's and they have had failed engine shocks or maybe a missing one at different times. Can't say I noticed.
