Dude, you can like, Google it. This is one of the most universally known things about the OM617 in the US and the reason why we have such a hard time finding 5-speeds for these cars.

I appreciate that. I was thinking "Is he really gonna make me Google this for him?" Hahaha

You did, when you asked for a picture of an OM61X with the starter on the right. The OM615, OM616, and OM617 are all OM61X engines.

In the context of my original question, the OM61X refers to the OM611/OM612/OM613 series. It would seem obvious that one could not mate a Six speed manual from a ML270CDI (w/ OM612) to an OM617 or older Diesel without heavy and very expensive modification. I hope this clears up the confusion???

Yes in this case it does, but most of us here assume an OM61X is an OM615, OM616 or OM617. Senior Luna made this assumption in post #19

I think the confusion comes because so many of us here own 616/617 engines (I have 3, soon will have 2 of each), but have barely, if ever, heard of the 611/612/613 engines. I didn't even know before this thread that there were any engines with an OM61X engine number except for the 615/616/617 engines.

Did we get that engine family in the US?

I thought you had meant 615/616/617 since, as was said, 61x is the engine family I just mentioned in 99% of the questions asked here.

Om602 to six speed manual transmission

I just did this yesterday for a swap that I'm doing in my 300gd. I ended up using using the following parts:

716.668 six speed transmission from an 02 c230. Crosses to transmission used in euro CDI drivetrains (good to 400 ft lbs of torque)

Euro sprinter flywheel and clutch kit (dual mass replacement - eBay, $500)

You have to grind about 1/8" off the end of the crank, because the recessed portion of the flywheel is just slightly more shallow than the crank extension beyond the bolt circle.

The input shaft of the transmission fits perfectly into the bearing and the clutch disk is direct fit as well.
