Securing the front by the tow hook is fine.

I would first try just attaching to a tree and letting inertia of movement pull with a strap. Gently rock the car against the strap. Then final pull with the ratchet straps.

How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

The Garbage Co. truck did the damage to the car, let them pay for the repairs.
An experienced body man will know where to pull and push to get the panel to pop back into position.

Were you whanging on this corner with a hammer? looks like maybe you did.
A hammer will stretch the metal, and then it will have to be shrunk.

A lot of DIY advice, it can be done, it can also go badly. I don't recommend using the car's inertia, if something gives/tears/buckles it will continue until the energy has been dissipated, at which point it will be too late.

A come-along can help, chain/strap the front of the car to an anchor point and slowly pull rearward, alternate to the straps mentioned above. The tire well if in good shape might be a good point for the hydraulic methods mentioned, but have a good reference for the shape and condition of the tire well points before you start so that you can detect movement/deflection before it becomes permanent and stop the process.

A body shop is of course the best (frame shop), as they have all of the equipment to avoid causing more damage and should be responsible to fix if they mess it up (usually a waiver if there's rust though). The key is that the body shop will have the equipment to stretch panels back into shape in a slow and controlled process, if the panel needs upward or downward pressure as it is being pulled out you will have a hard time creating the proper forces with your hydraulic jack (which don't work well laying down normally), you will be pushing upward as you push rearward.

I don't know about a 123 but a 126 has a crumple zone in the back. My 126 was hit a little harder than yours and a friend of mine who does body work used a portapower to get it where the trunk closes. The back panes where the license plate mounts wouldn't straighten and a new panel will need to be welded in. We may have to take a bigger piece including the crumple zone and part of the floor to fix it where it will be right. For now, I'm driving it and will let my friend decide the finer points of fixing since that's what he does.

You need a portapower, hammers and dollies and read a few books or maybe watch some YouTube videos. Body work is a major departure from mechanical work. It requires patience and the ability to envision how the bends progressed and then reverse the process.

Molyapina - did you buy this car off JB3? It looks like this car:

The trunk lid looked familiar, and for good reason. I believe that trunk lid is off my old '79 240D parts car.

If I'm not mistaken, the damage happened two owners ago. I'd say there's pretty much no chance of it playing out that way.

Right on all counts!
The garbage company did total out the car for the PO and make him whole before he sold to me. Molyapina is taking over the project. My contribution has been to age the project like a fine wine

Yes . Crunching the numbers makes it look like a 3.46 rear + 717.400 would give me good highway revs while keeping a lot of the scoot in the city.

Definitely, and try to nail down some performance stats. There's a dragstrip about an hour from here that has a street night every Thursday that I could go to to nail down some 1/4-mile times.

Edit: First street night April 6th!
