Can you post exactly what you got? Was it an email or a letter?

My local MB parts guy is going to hate me if I need to make him look up everything for me. I always figured giving us free access to EPC was a way to make our purchases at the parts counter relatively quick.

For me, this will have only two effects. I will purchase less from MB directly. And for dealer-only parts, I will waste a lot of time of their parts guy. Nice going, MB!

I think anyone who managed to renew a free subscription recently may have gotten lucky. I just tried to renew mine and the only option is the $75/year worldwide data, same as for a new user.

You can buy standalone EPC installations on eBay for under $20 that will run on your computer, no internet access required, no expiration. If it claims to run on Linux/Mac, those are Virtual Machine installations which will be slower, but may be easier to install. If it claims to require Windows, it's a 'native' installer which is more difficult to install, but runs way faster.

Well all this sounds pretty disheartening.

Thankfully I renewed in time.

It will only work with a windows based system.

I use a Mac and parallels 10, virtual machine, is working on the iMac, but not the Macbook, may install parallel 11 there.

Dave (or anyone else)-
Do you know if these discs have info for older cars (pre-1986). All of the ebay listings I found seem to focus on 1986 and later. I am happy to spend $20, but would be disappointed if it didn't work for my 1968 car. Thanks.

The "standalone" EPC install from discs has all data for all the old cars - no worries there. It has datacards too, but if the option is grayed out, you need to jump through some hoops to enable access (did mine 3 years ago so I forget the details).

The WIS only has useful data for approximately 1986-up... this is more chassis-specific, not year-specific. That is probably what the sellers are referring to. The WIS has good info on the W124, W140, W202, R129 and newer. It sucks for the W123 and W126. If you've never used the WIS, picture eating a bowl of soup using only a fork, with your hands tied behind your back... which is 100x easier than using the WIS.

X2 WIS is brutal..... On a side note, the w123 and w126 service manuals are available for free on the startec website. The w124 manual in its entirety is also available for free on another w124 only forum site.

These old service manual are beautiful indispensable tools... I wish they had kept the format for later cars instead of WIS.... WIS sucks...

The folks I feel the worst for are the parts guys at MB dealers. Their workload must increase with a change like this.

Price went up to $75/year for US "customers" on January 1, 2016. Ticked off a lot of people, me included. I had renewed in the past for several years, so I'm good until sometime in 2021, but it still pi$$e$ me off what they did.

Well, for some reason, the epc won't launch anymore, so I'm out of the loop too.
