Close, what you describe is a McPherson strut. A strut suspension does have the shock outside of the coil spring, such as in the 124 and other Mercedes cars with a front Strut Suspension (where the shock tube controls the location of the top of the steering knuckle).

In your car, the shock absorber and coil spring are separate, like this (the shock is mounted inside of the coil in this case):
