Progress of the 1980 300CD restoration

I started a thread last year about an engine project I took on for a friend.
OM617 N/A main bearing problem- I'm baffled
This turned into a progress thread for the car as it was being assembled and restored. The restoration started about post #96. Here are some recent photos. The 3 frame shot is of the engine bay before, during, and after. It is quite impressive. Enjoy......Rich

More photos. The last one is a larger one of the engine bay. Post 118 of the other thread shows the engine bay before detailing.

Looks really good. Did you do all of that in 5 months?

I usually get side tracked and wish I had a nice place to work with a lift.

Actually, I had the engine for about six months (June to December). In that time, I had the engine apart and put back together three times. Meanwhile, the car was being disassembled and painted (actually painted three times, but that is another story). About the time I finally got the knock gone from the engine, the car was painted and delivered to me for engine installation. My friend has been doing the assembly and detail work, with the result you see in the photos. The car is now almost too nice to drive.

Is this the "three times a charm car"?

It appears to be just that.
The first time was a color change, and that job did not turn out so well, so it was sanded and painted again. The second time, the color was too white and looked too "sterile". The third and final time, it was painted a warmer, more pleasant off white. Yes white is a boring color, but if you saw the car in person, you would agree that the color is perfect (for white at least).

I've got a box ful of parts from the 82 CD. Need anything? I tried to save everythiing that was coupe specific and not too hard to remove. Door panels, mirrors, outside trim, etc.

Credit where credit is due

I have to give credit for this awesome restoration to my friend Blue Nelson. He has put countless hours in the meticulous restoration of this car. I am just the guy that fixed the engine, and installed it. Even though I had the engine for many months, pulled the upper pan twice, pulled the head twice, and racked up many hours of labor to get the engine running without a knock, that was just a small part of the labor that has gone into the restoration of this car. Also, this forum has been a great asset for me, and I am happy to be a part of it. You members get a "high five" for all you have helped me accomplish since I have started hanging out here and working on these old M B's. Thanks, Rich

Beautiful car. The white looks particularly good on that 2 door, and with the new headlamp doors and fresh hubcaps. My two 300D's are both original paint and the clear-coat is going, though that is commonly seen here, even on ~15 yr old vehicles. The 1984 is white, so the clear-coat failure isn't too noticeable. I have thought of repainting white, but I saw a silver 300D in SF that looked fantastic and almost modern, and that wouldn't be a big color change from white.

Blue is an awesome hubcap (or wheel cover) restorer. He removes the dents, polishes and paints them to better than original perfection.

Finished product

I can't upload photos of the finished engine, and the donor car here, as they are in this thread starting at post 121: OM617 N/A main bearing problem- I'm baffled

Thumbs up Subscribed !

Apparently I met this Blue Fellow but didn't realize he's a competent painter much less one who has hands on Mercedes CD experience .

I'm keen to get my Coupe re painted so I'll be needing his Shop info to drive it by and see if he's interested .

He does NOT do the painting. He does most everything else.

ROLLGUY, when the image is open on the original post, click on it so the URL ends in jpeg or jpg (instead of html), copy the URL, then click on the Insert Image icon when you are in the "Reply to Thread" pane for the new post, and paste.

You'll post the full size image...like the ones below.
The first one is okay at 1280 x960.
This can be a little cumbersome with large images (like the second one = 2591 x1935)...as the image is not fully visible in one glance.
Right clicking on the large image can allow you to open it in a new tab in a more manageable size (1272 x 950).

Or you can use the Insert Link icon to post the URLs...like the ones below
When you click on the links, new tabs open with the images visible in manageable size.
