I really thought it would be quieter.

This car sat for about ten years. Shows 74k miles, and although the speedometer works sporadically, I don't think this is a high mileage car. I have service records from new. I recently did the following work: Valve adjustment, fuel tank removed and professionally restored, changed all flexible fule lines and filters, injectors rebuilt by Bosch service center, air filter service, two oil changes, and new glow plugs. Interesting note, the new #4 glow plug melted immediately upon being switched on. Replaced it with an old one and it worked flawlessly. It started right up and idled reasonably well, although not as smooth as I'd hoped. This is my first diesel so not too sure what to expect......

Sounds good to me. Clean, too. Pretty car. I'd be happy with it the way it is.

With the hood down and sitting inside with doors closed/windows up, it's a bit quieter. But just a bit! My father-in-law had one from new and he called it "The Banger". Don

OP's username is 76w115. My guess is that it's an OM616.

look good, you've cleaned it up nicely. a hood pad will help a bit with the noise.

The fact that you are in a garage will have a massive effect on the volume. Outside will help a lot. And inside the car will help even further.

But do you have any concerns about its noise besides the volume? I own a 220D w115 and your car has a sharper noise to it. It is hard to describe the difference, but if my car suddenly sounded like your car, I would think something bad had happened. I don't mean to raise concerns. Your engine is probably just better timed than mine, or maybe it is the microphone. I have a fair bit of chain stretch and I suspect my injection is late as a consequence. Apparently, that can make one of our engines sound less harsh.

But to revisit my question, other than the volume, do you have concerns about the engine sounds?

If you wanted, you could add a lot more sound proofing to cut down the noise. It'll never be quiet though.

I think part of what you might be hearing could be the wind from the fan interfering with the cell phone mic. I heard that too but only on the video. My concern is the really loud ticking, not too much different than I'd expect to hear from older or worn injectors. It runs pretty smoothly otherwise, and sounds particularly good inside the car, with the new motor mounts and subframe bushings.

Thanks! Proud to say I haven't cleaned it at all. It was found just like that. It did sit for a long time though, hence the extensive maintenance.

If you think its loud now wait until you get it up to 70.

115 240s are great for silencing yappy passengers

If you are in CA, you might try the new "Diesel HPR" fuel. My two 300D's seem to idle smoother on it, and it supposedly helps clean out the fuel system. It is made from ag and fish waste, so you will be greener than a Tesla, i.e. no net CO2 emissions. Compatible w/ regular D2, but 30c/gal cheaper when I filled up yesterday. Probably coming to other areas soon.

I'm in NJ, and haven't seen any fuels like that yet. I would like to see a little smoother idle, would be interested in trying it.

I drove it around the neighborhood for a little bit tonight, and once it warmed up thoroughly, it smoothed out and quieted down a lot. Now one of the new injectors is leaking, not from the fuel line or the bottom, but right from the middle, like it wasn't tightened well enough on rebuild. It's always something.

Rebuilt injectors are ALWAYS a bit noisy for the first few hundred miles. Once they seat in, they quiet down a lot.

Pull up the floor mats, and make sure the sound deadener is still present. W123's have a LOT, not sure how well the 115's are padded...

You can make it much quieter by driving in a hurricane.
50s tech diesel to the core. It seems glow plugs these days are such questionable quality.
