Charging Hassle
This is the goofiest thing: My 77 300D charges sometimes and sometimes not. I replaced the battery (it was pretty old) and the alternator (it was grinding). The thing is that the battery light should come on when the key is in the pre-glow position-sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Does MB loop the charging system through the key cylinder? I'm lost.

Make sure all the terminal blocks, battery connectors, and spade lugs that go to the terminal block are all clean and free of corrosion. I like to use a "Scotch-Brite" type of cleaner pad to remove oxidation from electrical connectors. It doesn't scratch like a wire brush. Good luck, Bob

Yes, the alternator is switched via the keyswitch. If the switch is bad or the wiring loose, you could be not charging the battery when the contact does not close or the wire is loose.
Check the condition of the connectors at the alternator, too -- they can be corroded and work fine until removed and replaced, when crud gets between the surfaces and prevents contact. It is also possible that the voltage regulator isn't making good contact with the slip rings -- same result. Peter
