Really good deal at Discount Tire for General AltiMAX RT43 tires! $225/four
I was looking at General AltiMAX RT43 tires in the 195/70 R14 size on Tire Rack for a while, but hesitating to pull the trigger because I would have been paying $320 with shipping and don't really have time to drive down to their CT warehouse during the week to bring the cost down to $260-ish. Then, today, I decided to look around at other places, and found that Discount Tire had them for $72.50 with free shipping, cheaper than TireRack's $67 + $13 shipping per tire. Then, when i clicked on it, I saw that there was a President's Day $75 rebate (Visa gift card) on a set of four! This meant that I could get a set of four good tires for $215, less than even the seedy no-name new tires that you find on Craigslist! I, of course, immediately put my order through. My total, with four valve stems (my current ones are ooolllld), is $225.
The General AltiMAX RT43 is rated as the third best tire in its class by Consumer Reports, behind the Michelin X-Radial (which costs $35 more per tire), and the Continental ContiPro Contact, which isn't available in a 14" version. TireRack's tests consistently put it at the top (although they haven't tested it against the Michelin). I'll post a review of them when they get here, but if you want them for a bargain-basement price, you probably need to act President's Day or before. Thanks for the great tip. I paid ~$400/set for my 300D's a few years ago. One set was Yoko Avid Touring S at Discount Tire (America's in CA) and the other set was General at Sears. I did get the full hazard warranties. Can't tell a difference between them. Both have a similar tread pattern as the AltiMAX.

They are showing out of stock for the 195/70/14 tires now. Too bad since I am looking for a set of 4 for my 240D.

The Discount tire version seems to be a T rated, 75000 mile tire, while that walmart version is H rated and 65000. I have 85000 on my current set of 75,000 rated tires and have been shopping for a new set for the wagon.
Here is the link for the T version at walmart for the same 70 buck per tire price. http://www.walmart.com/ip/General-Altimax-RT43-Tire-195-70R14SL-91T-BW/36748648 Like the gift card though.... |

Just talked with a customer service rep, they're getting some more in tomorrow, and as long as you order by end-of-day today, you'll qualify for the $75 Visa gift card rebate. They run on EST, so I don't know what would happen if you tried to order, say, past 9:00 PST...

Damn I wish the Canadian dollar wasn't so far in the toilet. Those are great deals.
I have to factor in about 32 percent on the exchange. Even at that, I would still be saving a bit over Canadian prices, but probably not enough to justify driving down to northern NY state to get them.

General AltiMAX RT43 tires - Road Noise / Tramlining
Re: Gen II W126 SDL...Always used Michelin. Current Michelin Primacy set need replacement, and I like what I'm reading. Here in Southern CA I spend a lot of time on grooved concrete highways.
So, how is the AltiMax with regard to road noise and tramlining? Also happened on Uniroyal Tiger Paw while following up on OP's links. Any thoughts about these tires? Thanks, Rob Quote:

Just a good solid all around tire value. When these wear out I will almost certainly buy another set.

Update - Puchased General RT43 H rated
Last Friday I put on a new set of 205/95/15 H General AltiMax RT43's.
Very affordable at 2/3 the cost and run a lot more comfortable and quite than the Michelins I have had in the past. Since mounting I've had them on the grooved freeway & asphalt highway to 90mph, around town, and up and down a local winding mountain road driving much harder than normal. Very quite, very comfortable, no vibration, track well, and stick just fine. No noticeable roll on hard cornering other than the normal W126 initial "lean". It took a crow bar to stop me from putting on more Michelins, but at this point I glad I did. Especially since I'm not looking for a 90,000 mile tire. Just want to "Glide" LOL P.S. Great Tire Rack, Consumer Reports, and other site blog reviews. I'll update after 10,k or so miles. Thanks again All! Quote:

I just bought new Michelin Defenders for mine this week. Box store (Tire Discounter) wanted 670 for the 4 out the door including the "free Alinement" My local shop ordered them for me and did everything plus alinement for 530. Plus I get 70 bucks back from a special that ended on the 10th .
Main reason I went with these tires are they are rated for 90,000 miles and had really good reviews. So I should be good for another 5 years. (Ride is fantastic with these tires btw) |
