I'll be sending you a private message about this, I've got the same pump in my '87 wagon, and the 4500 RPM cut-off messes up the full-throttle up-shifts. I can start a new thread to avoid hijacking your thread, or we can discuss here (your choice, let me know in the PM).

I too am running a .970 pump.

The max. RPM can be adjusted in the car, you will need to remove the washer-fluid reservoir and cruise-control actuator to access and remove the rear cover. I'm not sure that the setting procedure is on this forum however, ... might only be somewhere, ... else on a different forum devoted to super turbodiesels. There is of course risk to adjusting the max. RPM setting, ...

I am curious about your exhaust. I have a 603.971 on a stand next to my car, and it looks like the turbo won't fit inside the aluminum heat-shield / "inner firewall" on the passenger side. Did yours fit or are you not running that piece?
sorry for the late reply. I have not put the heat shield on but i do believe it will fit. my EGR leaks externally so it blows crankcase oil vapor crap all over The 90 degree rubber pipe that went to the air flow meter must be different on euro w124's but it's not a sweat if you just replace the airflow meter with PVC and shorten it more with the w140 manifold setup!

still need to get an egr block off so ignore nasty turbo but heat shield fits. will want to get some silicone tubing made up to go to the air cleaner so it looks nice as well.

Very nice.

I'm considering putting the entire .971 engine in the wagon, looks like there will be very little necessary to make it fit: intake and exhaust! The complicated part might be the oil pan, not sure that the 3.5l can survive with the .960 pan and no windage tray with that long stroke.

What I really need is a nice diagram of the pump internals with clear directions on what to adjust. Haven't been able to find that yet.

I think the oil pan would be the only questionable thing. So a 350TD? My friend's 350sdl that i service has a ton off off idle torque. It is a replacement engine with the "strengthened rods". He drives about 60k or so a year and the engine seems very healthy. It will be getting a 722.6 swap in the next few months and i'm hoping that won't kill it sooner. Since he is on the interstate all day the engine is sitting at like 3500rpm. constantly no real passing power there as the IP doesn't like to deliver much fuel up there and i sure don't want to touch it on a 3.5. Bringing rpms down with overdrive will put it back in it's torque range but will also put more stress on the rods? I've noticed running less rpms since doing the 722.6 has helped literally everything that is belt driven on my car.

I have an oil pan on my 350SDL that came from a 124 OM603. I had to modify the oil runners (not sure if that is the proper name, but the aluminum fences or ribs sticking up inside the pan). I have a thread somewhere showing what I did. I have over 20,000 miles so far on the car with the pan, with no issues that I am aware of......Rich

EDIT: found it :Getting my newly acquired 350SDL back on the road starting at post #39

Did you install the .97 windage tray in the .96 pan? I know that you have to machine the baffles in the pan to fit the tray(s), and the .971 pan IIRC is deeper to have the same capacity without the side-sump. Not sure that's the case with the .970.

Anyway, I was expecting that the windage tray is necessary with the deeper excursion of the rods, considering the longer stroke, and could be a problem combined with the windage / rotating air in the sump from the crank at higher RPMs, ... if it is working for you though, ...

I am thinking at this point it is moot however, took pictures of the car today, think it's time to sell her and move on, probably won't go near her with a wrench again. Sigh, the things we do for a happy marriage.

Old thread, but OP was active a few days ago.

BenzTurbo, could you share some more about your 722.6 swap, and what it takes to get it dialed in including Ole's controller: speedo, driveshaft, etc? Best donor vehicle for the 722.6? Still like the 2.65 rear end?

I'm quite interested in putting one behind an OM603 and curious for more feedback.

Thanks a bunch!
