78' 240d lift pump volume?

I am trying to chase down a no start. Doesn't seem like there is near enough fuel coming out of the metal lines at the injectors when I have them loose. Just a little dribble out of each one.

I am sure the screen in the tank is pretty good as I can get a substantial amount of fuel when pumping the primer valve. (All new filters are in place)

Today I removed the line from the inlet of the main fuel filter that comes from the lift pump to check and see how much fuel or if any would come from the lift pump while cranking. It would pump between a teaspoon and tablespoon every spurt while cranking. Is this enough? Seems like It would pump with a little more pressure and volume......

I am moving this to Diesel Discussion, the forum goers there would be better suited to answer.

Well it costs little to rebuild the lift pump and these pumps are usually probably the original ones never touched. The volume you describe sounds adequate but remember you are not working against any head the relief valve or filter rerstriction offers. To me it is very important to have adequate fuel pressure in the base of the injection pump on the 616 four cylinder engines.

That said are you positive your glow plug circuit is operating properly?

Thanks for the reply, I am absolutely sure all glow plugs are working. I took each one out and hooked to 12 volts and every one had a glowing red tip almost immediately.

I also took out all injectors and pop tested them. All were fine and popping off within 100 psi of each other.

Also, I have the lift pump that is a little different from the ones I see offered. It has the manual primer on the right hand side of the lift pump instead of the middle.

Not sure if the rebuild kit will be the same for this one?

Great that you individually checked the glow plugs. Just verify they are actually working in place by watching the interior ceiling light when the glow plug light is on.

It should remain dimmer with the glow plugs on until the relay clicks off. Probably best done in low light conditions. You just want to make absolutely sure they are functioning.

I see no reason the valves would be different in the cheap lift pump rebuild kit although checking what pump numbers it fits is a sound ideal.

Was this no start a sudden occurance? Or has the car been getting harder and harder to start until it would not?

It was sudden. Would start fairly well, parked one day then next day no start. I have the ford starter solenoid for the glow plugs and have checked that it is indeed sending power to the plugs.

I also took the lines off from the pump to the injectors and cranked it. Seems like hardly any fuel at all is coming out of IP. Just a few small droplets. Expected a lot more
