I removed the viscous fan clutch and fan from my 85 300D before last summer and ran it with just the AC aux fan all summer. Only above 90 F in stopped traffic was the aux fan not able to keep up (coolant temp gauge would creep up to 100F) and I'd pull over and shut the engine off, let aux fan run for a few minutes to cool it off.

I have this aluminum framed 13" elec fan that looks well built and I think would keep the coolant temps in check in the hottest days of summer around here (rarely gets above 95F). Plan is to run it at full speed at first. If sufficient, than mate it to a PWM speed controller.

I am looking for ideas in how to mount this fan which is pretty heavy at 6 lbs. What material should I use? Where should the mounting points be?

Marschal? I have no data on them, but I'd guess about 1500CFM@15A current draw, 0 static pressure. Airflow will be somewhat compromised if all you use is the integral ring shroud, or were you planning to fit this to the stock shroud?

The easiest mounting solution is a set of plastic "thumb tacks", which mount the fan directly to the core. This isn't good for the long term health of the core, but I would guess that's an old radiator, and so longevity may not matter. Here's what I mean:

My radiator is in exc condition and I'd not want to ruin it. I'll have to dig out the shroud and measure the diameter of the opening and find a fan to fit and mount directly on the shroud. Do you think the shroud is strong enough?

Seems like this fan is an add on, to cover for "the real problem".

Why not skip the fan and fix whatever the real problem is? Unless it's really expensive to fix it right, it might just be better in the long run to fix the actual problem rather than putting a band-aid over it.

At least 16 inch !

it seems to me that air moved is proportional to the blade area, so a greater diameter fan does a lot more. maybe buy one with a matching shroud so all you have to fab is the mount for the flat shroud surround.

if you are ditching the mechanical fan, best bang for your buck is a lincoln mark viii fan. two speeds and crazy high cfm.

x2 on a fan that comes with a shroud. Mk VIII sounds good. Taurus fans are popular. The W220 fan with offset motor will probably pull the car along with a big enough alternator.

I was looking at aftermarket PWM fan controllers for another project. A common Volvo two speed relay should be good enough to start.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have since installed a 16 inch fan and did some tests with a cardboard shroud. You can follow what I did in this thread 86-91 W126 aux fan into W123 300D ??

I will be removing the 16" Bosch fan to install a Prius double fan with a shroud as a puller soon. I have the fan, just need to fashion some mounting brackets for it.
