I wouldn't be concerned about 230k as such. As long as it's been well maintained, if you can pick it up for $4600, go for it.

I do agree with Joe in the sense that, if you can find one with significantly fewer miles for a few thousand dollars more, that might be the better way to go. It's simply a question of what you're willing and able to afford.

How many miles are on the 99? If its significantly less it might be the better option.

this is the rub....i think i can get a 170k-ish for under $7k but you just cannot eliminate the possibility of an unanticipated costly repair. i'm so used to driving disposable cars (i.e. if something breaks i'm not financially invested enough to care, plus i can part it out)....that's the attraction to the lower priced one: i could likely get muck of the $$ out, even if it did break, by parting it......the horror........the horror

Especially because of where you live, you need to factor in the cost of rust repair on the W210.

Assuming comparable maintenance histories and condition, if it's a choice between a CDI with 230k and an W210 with 166k for basically the same money I would definitely go for the CDI.
