The calipers look identical. If you have not changed anything except the calipers then why don't you put the old one back in and see what happens. It should be easy to find out what binds the wheel. Just undo the new one and swing it aside, tie it securely behind. Put the old one back, leave the pads out and mount the wheel to see whether it binds. You have your answer in 1/2 hour.

Can you post a picture up of your wheels please? Intrested to see what they are .If original Mercedes wheels or not. If disc calipers are orderd on you vin number and the wheels are genuine fit to your car then they must fit without a problem. Anyone think on the same lines as me.

Again guys, can anyone confirm that there were two different parts numbers for the Bendix caliper for a 300sd in 1981? Someone must know.

Here is a pic of the wheel. About five years ago when I repainted all. They are original to the vehicle. I am the original owner and they have never been changed.

There is no gap between the caliper and vehicle where bolted together. Cannot use feeler gauge.

I finally figured out last night that I need to jack up the other side, pull off the wheel, and look at the caliper. Then compare to what I have just installed. Not sure why it took me this long to figure it out. I am convinced that I will find that the right side caliper nestles slightly nearer the center of the vehicle than does my new left side caliper. Must be.

OK, just called Pep Boys and they now have the "other" parts number caliper. Will pick it up after lunch and report back.

However I talked to Baker Auto Parts with the original Mercedes parts number (got it from Pelican who says they no longer have Bendix, only have ATE) and Baker assures me there is no other parts number for that year.

Between Bendix and ATE, one brand is more expensive. Only the more expensive was available remanned from O'Reilly's and they sold me a set at the lower price. I've found it worth while to buy calipers locally especially if remanned because they frequently have to be returned. Rears have been boxed as fronts, left as right, pistons in the bore crooked, bleed screw cross threaded and leaked - but man they are cheap (when I don't count my time). I always count my time. It's my most limited resource.

Headed to Atlanta Botanical Gardens party so wife will not let me work on the car. Pep Boys decided the "alternative" caliper was not for my car so I am back to square one.

Thinking about putting in the old caliper and limping back to Pep Boys and making it their problem.

Has me stumped for now. Arrgh.

Frank - will try this but see absolutely no way it could make a difference. The rotor moves freely with or without the pads. The bind comes when I tighten up the lug nuts.

What are you thinking? Do not understand. Are you suggesting that I tighten up the lug nuts with only one brake pad installed?

Exactly: remove the outboard pad, leave the inboard, and re-install the pins.

One more thing it may be , are you fitting the new caliper on , with the new bolts , that came with them to hold the caliper to stub axle ,,if so check the size in length with the old ones. They might be bottoming out .
