Flywheels

I have been slowly working on my 85' 300d turbo, converting it to a 4 speed as time and money allows. I have been reading about the differences between a 240d flywheel and a 300d flywheel. From what I have gathered the 300d flywheel just looks thicker, and has 10(?) more lbs to it.

I have a full machine shop in my garage, is there any reason why I can't just machine a 10lb ring and bolt it to the flywheel prior to balancing? This was just an idea I had in my head so it's not like I'm running out to go get material for this, it's more of a discussion about the topic.

I understand I can just buy a flywheel, but these kinda projects are why I have a machine shop. Also the cost of the correct flywheel is more than I paid for all the other parts of the conversion combined, 240d flywheel included.

My idea was to find someone with the 300d flywheel and get a correct weight, and size.

What are your thoughts? I searched and couldn't find another thread on this topic.

You could add a ring. I'd use locating pins in addition to the bolts though to get an accurate placement.....or you could do a lap and do a shrink fit.

I just bought one for my swap. I imagine it should be here in a week or so. It was expensive :-( , about twice as much as I've got invested in the OM617. Let me know what other specs besides the weight you want off of it, and I'll be glad to provide them.

I have the 240D flywheel, and I've been using it behind a 617 since 2010. I think of it as the "race spec" flywheel for a 300D. Less rotating mass means faster acceleration. There's a slight penalty in that you get some vibration at high engine load combined with low vehicle speed. Easy fix is you wait a little longer to shift. I don't generally use 4th below 45 mph unless it's downhill. I also don't use 3rd below 25-30 mph. The vibration issue is absent in 1st and 2nd.
