Ignition tumbler Pin not coming out
Long while back purchased a replacement tumbler without having it coded, based on the instructions online (which seem to be no longer available) that the pin holding the assembly easily slip out. However, not happening. How do you get it out, or am I forced to buy another that is coded ann loose $100?
B.T.W., the instructions online that used to be available are wrong, as can't press/drift the pinout. On the old unit, tried drilling out using a drill press since pressing wasn't working, but not enough detent to center the bit, so the bit was wandering and bending. So, I just pried apart the unit. However, this isn't going to work as now the pin can't be removed. Thank y'all in advance for any help! :D |
The roll pin only needs to be removed if you want to re-key the tumbler. If you bought a new tumbler, don't mess with it, just install it. As I recall, the roll pin is in a blind hole and must be drilled out. A drift is not gonna work. IIRC it was a 1/16" drill bit.

Yes, I was stupidly trying to save money and instead rekey myself. I spent a half hour drilling on it until the drill bit folded over... Made absolutely no progress in all that time. I am just going to pay the $200 and be done. Got to get a new lock anyway (didn't help using a screwdriver), plus a couple other parts. Lesson learned: Mercedes are a bit more pricy and should quit with trying to save money. :P |

What's wrong with buying a new after market tumbler that is keyed differently than the door key? They are $15 to $20 and works fine. Hide the ign key in the car so you don't have to carry 2 keys if that is a concern. Not good to have a lot of weight on the key in the tumbler bouncing around scratching everything around it. |

Brand new bit. You know how hard it is to find a set of metric drill bits not made in China/Asia? Think this is about the third or forth I have broken in this set, and not hard on bits. I even use cutting oil. I have asked on here, but even they couldn't help. Because aftermarket are most, if not all, junk and don't want the risk of being stranded. As for putting another key inside, I loose it with my memory and the dog. There is also the shame. My Dad's Beetle has two keys and a shame. You got that right and preaching to the choir. :P Many years ago slimmed down my key ring to just a few based on that advice. Probably need to do that again as now have both home and Church keys on the ring. Oh, and not one for useless keychains to wear out pockets. Wish could find those leather tags they used to have: small and light. |
What size metric drill did you use? If you broke the first drill and a piece of it got stuck in there all bets are off for subsequent drilling.

1.5mm broke on the original and the 2mm just bent over into roughly a bent P shape. None of the pin was significantly removed in the half hour of continuous drilling. |
