Oil Cooler Leaking

I have a 1981 240D and the oil cooler hoses are leaking. I've researched some about replacement but most of the posts and pictures of w123 oil coolers I have seen have one hose at the top of the cooler and one hose at the bottom. The old cooler in my 240D has both hoses connecting at the bottom of the oil cooler. Do I need to order two bottom hoses or one upper hose and one lower hose? What will fit the best?

I cannot answer your specific question on which hoses to use but it is common when you loosen the Oil Cooler Nuts for the aluminum Nipple to strip the threads.

There is at least one thread on some methods to try to avoid that from happening. Multiple applications of penetrating Oil and letting it soak is one of them.

I stripped one of mine and there is a repair fitting that you can install on the Oil Cooler but you need to determine if the threads are the same as on a W123 300D Oil Cooler so you know the fitting works. There is 2 threads on how to do the repairl

Just had to get these for my '82 240d, the lines weren't dripping but were getting that oily sweat look...

You will need the engine number from the block, the hoses are different and one is harder than the other to get. One on mine was a cohline #6161870682 (easier to get) and the other ended up being a trucktec version for my engine number, was the last they had.

I will most likely take the old lines down to the hydraulic shop and get them redone just as a backup which may be what you will have to do as well if you are unable to find both on the web.. there is a lot of good reading on this site from those that have been there & done it before.. Tips etc.. Worth reading up on it.

Punched the part# 616-187-06-82 and this is what MB of Atlanta shows.

Mercedes OIL LINES

It shows a whole range of years. The picture shows both Oil Lines going to
the top and bottom.

The one on my 80 240D, both lines go into the bottom.
The cooler is Aluminum, un painted, and has fins, compared to the ones used on the 300D`s.
I have seen some coolers that look like the 300D one, but both lines go into the bottom.

1981240D you could go with the oil lines like Mach4`s set up. Using AN fittings.
Use your metal lines, weld on the AN fittings and use separate hoses.

Thanks everyone. I'm still confused and apprehensive to change the oil cooler lines even though I know it is very important before all the oil leaks out and then it's engine rebuild/replace time. I have had leaks at the oil cooler lines for many years now. I keep putting it off after reading about how difficult they are to replace. And now after realizing my oil cooler has both hoses connecting to the bottom of the cooler, it makes me not want to attempt this repair at all. I checked the South Atlanta Mercedes list of oil hoses but I'm confused as to which ones I need. There are many different ones listed there. The number on my engine block is: 616.912.12050911
The oil cooler is unpainted and has small fins.

The oil lines are pricy from the dealer, but may be the only place to get them.
Give them your Vin# when ordering.

Your Cooler is like mine, unpainted and with fins. Thing looks fragile.

I have one hose fitting that has been wet the past 5.5 yrs I have had this 240. Just the fitting, not the hose.
