manual trans conv
W123 manual transmissions;
There appear to be two types, early/late, one piece and two piece, iron/aluminum? Any functional difference between them? Preference? Will a late (82) trans fit an early 240 (79)? |

Should be no difference functionally and will fit any model 123 body except late euro models with the 190e engine.

The shift linkages are completely different though. The later 4-speed and then 5-speed was used in the 190's as well, but I don't know for how long, or with what engines.

I have a complete car that came with a euro 240d it had a 616 and a 5 speed, it is for sale.....
As I understand going from auto to manual it is best to buy the whole car so you get the shifter, pedals, driveshaft, and trans cross-member. but I haven't done the swap myself.

To address the original post:
The "early" trans with the cast iron case was made by Mercedes and is rumored to be a bit stronger than the later, aluminum case. The later trans was made by Getrag. I run the aluminum case trans in Mutt the Race Truck with no issues. I think the switch from iron to aluminum case was 1981 though I'm not positive on that - my trans was from an '83 240D. I agree with getting the whole car for the swap bits. Even putting the trans into an S-10 pickup it was far easier to have the crossmember, shifter and linkage, etc. than to try to source all that stuff individually. I replaced the shift linkage bushings and it shifts as smooth as silk. Bleeding the clutch hydraulics WILL be a PITA but I had success with bleeding it from the bottom to the top using a huge syringe (used for horses and cattle) that I got from our vet. My build thread is one of many on here detailing the swap. Dan |
