wow - 85 300td sold for $14,500 on BAT

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300TD | Bring a Trailer

I have to admit, I was rather shocked seeing this sale price - even for what looks to be a great car.

You can not buy a new car in that price range that is as reliable as this one.

I would pay it for a Metric engine and new paint. Very worth it.

Still surprising to see, I thought the interest had waned for these cars.

Wow, very nice, perfect Mercedes colors too!

Maybe the interest has waned, and only really nice examples are desirable?

That's insane, wow. Looks like my wagon with better paint and a slightly nicer interior. Hopefully I can get mine into that condition in the next few years.

Sounds like a lot of money, for the price, everything should work.
Wonder why the engine and trans were rebuilt at 127K miles? and a Diff replacement?
I can see the axles being replaced even with low miles, maybe cracked boots.
Rear seat bottom separating from frame and in the picture the R/R seat bottom looks flat.
Lights on secondary panel not working, (what ever that is) and the Pass side Visor may just be a bulb.

This thing may have more miles than what is listed, never know.

Getting harder to find good clean W123 bodies, but 14K is a bit much.

That's a bit steep, I even see a little rust on the air filter enclosure.

I could have a really nice 1995 E300 for sale by the end of today for anything close to that price, not a speck of rust. Only $14,250!

i know i overpaid for mine (rust free body with nice paint and interior) but this makes me feel really good about what I paid if somebody in that fairly well-educated community would drop almost 15k on this particular car. Knowing what people pay for simple Toyota trucks (for example) of same vintage and excellent condition, I think one could argue these cars should be worth something like this.

That makes me feel really good about what I paid for my 84 300TD. Well, actually, I felt pretty good about what I paid before I saw this. I like the wagon as it fits the kind of stuff I do. The only down side I can see is the small fuel tank.

Regards,

W.

Rebuilt mechanically to that extent is not typical. Although if the buyer is happy with his purchase. It is up to the individual I guess.

Personally as it is common with these cars higher total miles may be on the chassis. I wonder what the steering wheel looks like?

Actually I did go back and look. I do not think the claimed milage is indicated by it but I am no expert. I have a 123 with a probable 162K and the wheel looks far less worn. I also have a couple of other examples with around 200k and their steering wheels also look better. Yet it could just be the picture he took.

even accounting for 3-4k in professional engine/tranny rebuilding, that's a strong price for the seller I think. Mileage doesn't seem that suspect to me - my 82 300d (one short term owner between me and the original) has a verified 113k miles. Doesn't seem too improbable depending on the person/scenario.

not affiliated in anyway, but Bring A Trailer is highly addictive stuff. bringatrailer.com

it's how I got into the diesel benz, though I didn't purchase mine via them.

It has always been amazing to me when I see my fellow W 123 enthusiasts question the increasing values of our cars. I, for one, am pleased that the value of our cars is appreciating and the rest of the world sees what wonderful cars we have. If the value of 123 cars continues to rise, doesn't that mean that we as owners of 123 cars all gain?
