Newb injector question!

Hey mercedes people! Just a few questions on my 300sd injectors. Im in the process of restoring this 82 beauty that ive christened "Edna". Im new to Mercedes and diesel but ive been working on cars for 20ish years.

Ive pulled my injectors for cleaning, new nozzles and to hopefully fix a rough idle issue. I was pretty shocked to see the state of them. The lower half of all of them was carboned up so badly that i had to drive the old nozzles out. The previous owner said the the car had been run on WVO which i can only assume is what caused this. The question i have is should i even try to clean these or just find some donor injectors to rebuild? Also, i dont plan on running wvo is there anything else in the car the could have been gummed up by this.

I should mention that i have done a diesel purge and besides the rough idle the car was running pretty well on the old injectors.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum.

If you had to drive them out, it is likely that they were installed poorly and were not protected from combustion heat and gases.

I would replace them. Unless you are familiar with the procedure and have the tools to do so, i would have a shop or a forum member on this site rebuild them for you.

I have used Monark and Bosio nozzles successfully. I have witnessed Bosch India nozzles and they were slightly less desirable but would work just fine.

Diesel purge will not solve the problem.

It is worth noting that rough idle on these engines is often solved with a valve lash adjustment.

and sometimes an updated rack dampening bolt (rack dampener) on the back of the injection pump

jt20...thanks for the reply, Ill see if i can find some that are more rebuildable than these. I already ordered the monark nozzles so im gonna try to do the work myself. The heat snields were all covered with carbon too, some were attached to the bottom of the injectors with carbon.

When you remove the Injectors, always use a new heat shield.

Here is a good link to rebuilding your injectors.

vincewaldon.com - HOW-TO: Rebuild Diesel IDI Injectors

Go to www.dieselgiant.com he has some good DIY on valve adjustment and I think one on rebuilding the Injectors.
For some reason I cant connect to them tonight.

Do you have any PNP`s close to you? If so pull a set on Injectors from a wreck to rebuild.

If it has been running on WVO

for a while, you may want to pull the in-tank filter screen and look at it's state. If it is gunked up, it may be prudent to have the tank cleaned. You could have a fuel flow problem caused by running that stuff.

If the tank screen looks clean, just keep a handful of primary fuel filters (the small plastic one) in the car for a while and keep an eye on that filter. Thats' why they are transparent.

Second jt20 irt nozzles. I replaced the Bosch with Bosio and the old car has never run better.

I recommend you soak all cylinders with marvel mystery oil while you have the motor open.

Get a gallon and fill each a good bit.

Change the oil after you spin the motor over spraying out the remainder of oil.
This will clean up any open valve seats, and free up any gunked up rings.

"Spraying" is the operative word in this sentence. Cover the exposed injector holes with a large towel before you spin the engine over!

275 PSI compression will expel the oil an impressive distance. The goop will then hit the underside of the bonnet and then run down the fenders and inner wells. If you still have the insulation under the hood you'll get to "enjoy" the odor of the oil every time the temperature warms up. Mmmm, mmm, mmm!

Give the MMO time (24 hrs) to do it's work.

Thanks for all replies and good advise...I took the least nasty looking of my old injectors apart last night and boiled it in an old turkey fryer that i converted to a hot tank. I used water and dawn dishwasher detergent and left it in there for about three hours. It did a pretty decent job on the grease but the carbon around the inside of the lower half was still there. I followed up with a small brass brush attachment on my dremel to get the carbon off the inside walls of the lower injector half. It came out pretty clean. Gonna follow up tonight with lapping, a soak in lacquer thinner and reassembly.
VStech the MM oil treatment sounds interesting and worth doing while I have the injectors out. I'm assuming I would just add it into the prechambers and let it soak, get a bunch of towels ready and crank the engine over? How much per cylinder should be added?
Oh I also should mention that I'm using that Startron Diesel additive in the hopes that it will eat some of the crap inside the tank.

Until the cylinder is full. With their being a slight tilt on the vertical axis you'd want to make sure there's enough liquid to saturate all away around the piston.

If you want the carbon gone I'd recommend a gallon bucket of the carburetor cleaner sold at auto parts stores. It's about 20 bucks. They come with a small basket for dipping parts but you probably would want to find some bowls or something so you won't mix one injector's parts with another.

I used a brass bottle brush for the interiors and steel toothbrush for the outsides. That cleaner removed everything but a little rust on the outside of one injector. A little sandpaper took care of that.
