Exclamation 1997 E300D, power steering leak (gasket I think) burst after car sat a couple years.

The leak, as I can observe with the intake manifold still on, appears to be coming from block, looks like a gasket blew on a cover on the bottom of the block. I don't know anything about power steering sytems. I read online that a mercedes (different model) was self bleeding; I was having problems turning the steering wheel, the power steering would work momentarily, after doing this for about 4 minutes, I heard some kind of burst and the power steering fluid leaked out, I know it was power steering fluid because it was full and now it's empty.

I can see the hoses coming from the pump to the back, and both hoses appear fine. It's something right behind the starter, I can see it. Tomorrow I will jack up the car and see if I can work on it.

Does anyone have any experience with the power steering system or the problem I am dealing with? Thanks!

Streatch did a pictorial on rebuilding the steering box. I forget what car it was on but all are similar. There are usually only a few parts in the system - the Pump, pressure line, steering box and return line. The return line has clamps. The pressure line has some type of crimp fittings.

Not really sure what your issue is from the description. Bleeding is not difficult. Fill the reservoir. Lift wheels, turn steering wheel from lock to lock, refill reservoir, try it again, start engine. Look for leaks & air bubbles/foam, turn wheel, check fluid again, look for leaks, go drive, check again.

Question

ugh! jack up steering wheel, that would have helped I'll bet, abit after the fact haha. I will know next time. sooome day I may be an ok mechanic haha. I was wondering why it was so hard to turn; jacking up the wheels would have fixed that.

Do you have a link to the post you mentioned?

Mine's a 1997 E300D. The return and pressure hose both have bolt connectors to, I guess the steering box? Thanks for the info!

Anyone got anything else to help me out? Thanks!
