According to the FMS for my 84 300SD
it takes 100 g/l of citric acid for each liter of coolant to flush the system. With there being 12.4 L of water it needs 2.7 lbs of citric acid.
Is my approach to this valid and are the caculations accurate? Is there a particular grade/level of quality of product which is acceptable for flushing my cooling system?

I don't see a reference to Mercedes Citrus Flush in the manual. Thanks for the help with the banjo bolt on the injector pump. It's amazing what that and a few more small parts can do for the performance of a 30+ year old Benz.

no probs, and you're welcome.
I think "citrus flush" is a 'common' chemical which can be bought in its generic form on E B A Y and other places for around $5 bucks a pound according to a few sites I scouted. They may have tweeked the formula or added something else to make it proprietary ... who knows. I am planning on doing this; however, I plan on getting a cheap-o horrible freight pump and running this overnight, probably a few hours of the degreaser as noted on DieselGiant's webpage and then the flush. |

The suggestion of shout-out was really good.
Tell me about the pump and your plans to flush the system. What about temperature requirements for flushing?

there's a bunch of You Tube videos where folks simple set up a pump and let the flushing process cycle overnight. A bucket of stuff, pump, some hose from Lowes or HD, et cet. You have to remove the thermostat. I think the cheapo pumps are under $20 bucks. I am thinking this would be the most complete possible way to flush the entire coolant system. You could start off with boiling water but it will cool down after a few hours.

The last time I learned to flush I must have been about six years old. Mama just didn't tolerate forgetting to flush.
I'm just about positive the cooling system on my car hasn't been flushed since the dealer handled the maintenance. I'm with you on using the bucket flush.

I posted one video, but I don't think you will end up with as many gallons of waste which this guy claims. I am thinking you will end up with around 15 gallons max, and the last 3 should not be that funky. I will try to find the other videos. The one guy did something similar to DieselGiant, using the detergent first, then something similar to CitrusFlush. I can say even after starting with what appeared to be clear water, after overnight it was really funky. Then, flushed with clean water, another overnight deal and it was funky again, and same for the 3rd night. However, it was clean on the 4th day. Each "cycle" was around 3 gallons. And yes, there was a small handful of sediment after each 3 gallon deal, which I found really surprising. It was at least a table spoon x 3.

I hate to say this, but just hit-up Ebay or the jobbers on the net.
I am actually pretty computer illiterate ... my kids are embarrassed by my apparent lack of computer or tech savvy ... |

I bought 5 lbs of citric acid on ebay a few years ago. Labeled "not for consumption", but if I have left-over I'll make lemonade. I use 1 lb per flush and drive with it for a day. Make sure you unscrew the block drain (under turbo, feel for it) to fully drain the block and flush out rust, old core wires, you would be amazed what can be in there. Your heater core has aluminum tubes, so you may choose to bypass it if doing an aggressive flush. After a thorough flushing and drying, I put Evans coolant in my 300D's so no more concerns (I hope).
