How Fast Is an OM617?

The answer is 121.2284 in a mile. WITH A SLIPPING CLUTCH! Mutt bumped the record by 20 MPH in our class with a badly slipping clutch.

Goran (Dieselmeken) turned me onto a Euro clutch fix. It turns out that there are no performance clutch parts for a 300SD/240D engine/trans combo....... or ARE there??!! The guys in Europe run a BMW 320i disc which is available in a performance version. I have an FX Stage 3 unit sitting here which has a 6 puck sintered copper friction surface. It came in a kit with the performance pressure plate and while I can't be sure until I get everything out and measured it looks like it might fit, too. I'll keep y'all posted on that.

For the first time I actually had too much EGT. It peaked at 1320 or so for just a couple of seconds right at the finish line. I wasn't running the intercooler but I'm not sure how much effect that will have on the EGT anyhow. So a bit more research is needed.

I'm guessing 130 is in our future.

Dan

1320f... a degree per foot of travel!

that's REALLY hot... you might ought to spray some water or install the intercooler... it's gotta help.

The intercooler is there and ready. I just didn't add any ice water and turn on the pump because I already had more HP than I could put thru the clutch. I plan to run it next meet with a functional clutch.

BTW - we run 5280 feet so it's just 1/4*F/foot. Can't prove anything in a quarter mile (just trying to annoy my drag racing buddies).

As an aside - the pneumatic shut-down system worked great though I only had JUST enough air for 1 run. I think I'll add an air suspension compressor to keep the tank full at all times.

Thanks for all the kind words! I thought you folks would get a kick out of this.

Dan

Ahh. In a mile... I misread. Still... pretty quick! I can't wait for the cooler and clutch to see what it really can do.

My best race speed is 127.08 in the 1/4 mile in my small block camaro... my best time is 10.85 with a trap speed of 75mph... on fire through the lights... carried the front wheels 1/2 way down the track on that pass and split the trans line dumping fluid on the headers... flame on...

Like I said, you can't learn anything in a quarter mile!

Goran thinks the intercooler ought to bring down EGTs so I'll try that at the next meet, which I was going to do anyhow. He was happy but not surprised at our (Mutt and my) improvement.

VSTech - want to ride along for the next meet? Bet you'll get hooked - it's great fun. (Probably shouldn't invite you 'till I check with my usual pit rat who couldn't make it this time). Still, there's often room in the right front seat of Truck (the Dodge). You'll have to share a too-warm room with me if you want free lodging but they always give me a double room.

First you'd have to grow said balls.
