Stock configuration with the common 3.07 diff? Probably ~100MPH with a tailwind and slight downhill grade. MB claimed 103mph top speed according to Automobile Catalog.

Perhaps a little faster with the 2.88 diff?

Maybe so, maybe no. 300SDL I had would do 120 with a 2.88 diff. Significantly more power and torque than a OM617 tho, and it still took a while to get there. My 350SD will get to 110 with a 2.82, limited mainly by the RPM limiter.

Automobile Catalog shows that the 1985 models with the 2.88 were claimed by MB to have a top speed of 106mph. Lack of torque and a poor breathing head limit top-end on the 61x engines. Most of the power improvements in the 602/3 come from a cross-flow head design that breathes significantly better and has more usable torque higher up the rev range as a result.

Sounds about right on top speed. I have seen about 105 several times in a 300turbo. With the euro 300na I went 100 mph in fourth and in fifth...running the 307 diff.

I did 80 in my truck once.

It didn't like it much, and frankly neither did I.

Ah, the venerable 603.970. Would that be with billows of white smoke belching out the back?

Isn't it dependent on weight, aerodynamics, and parasitic drain?

I never had a 5 speed NA car, but can agree a NA will do 100mph in 4th at max revs - I'd always wondered how fast it would go if not on the governor!

At least 105

My friend was driving his recently purchased 300TD home and got it to 105. He said there was more in it. The car was very smooth at that speed......Rich

Completely flat out in a well tuned straight piped 300SD in ideal conditions (flat) I was able to lay it on the 5,250rpm governor on occasion around 109-112mph. Its really screaming at that speed, feels like flying a single engine plane. And yet....never any problems, sold it at 323k still running fine.

Now my GLK will reach that speed easily at about 2,900rpm with LOTS left to give...and quietly. Crazy stuff. I believe it has the USA 130mph tire-based limiter on it. It cruises comfortably over 30mpg @85 with the A/C on around 2,200rpm

Nope. Surprisingly it's a healthy survivor. No smoke, no leaks, no oil consumption. Crazy.

More power to you! It appears if you get them to slip by the rod bending issue they can be found with 500K on the odometer. The trap ox/cracked head issue of the 603.961 didn't get passed on to it and it certainly has the nicest (and youngest) interior of all the w126 diesels.

The book on the 99 E300 was 135 mph IIRC.

" " " " 05/06 E320 CDI is 161 mph. Cruises ALL DAY @ 145 mph.

I'll take an 05/06 CDI

I got mine for an embarrassingly low dollar amount because it didn't run. When it did run, it made a noise similar to what you'd expect the Earth to make when splitting apart. One of those noises that makes even Helen Keller scream "SHUT IT DOWN! SHUT IT DOWN FOR GOD'S SAKE!"

The problem turned out to be a stuck open EGR valve. Diesels don't like to run on their own exhaust. I "fixed" the problem, and no issues since. My original intent was to swap a 3.0L in it, either a 603.96 or a turbo 606. But this engine runs and drives so well, and I like the torque it makes, so it's a keeper.

I have more HP (230ish from my last dyno run and I now have a much bigger turbo). Remember that stock they make 126 for the best numbers I've gotten though you'll hear other number but it's in that range.

With the second turbo and the Dieselmeken pump I've run a best of 136.2, running 26 PSI boost. When we get to the track post-Covid I'm shooting for 150 with 40 PSI though there will be more than a little tuning to get there.

In stock trim I ran a best of 96 or so with the stock pump and stock turbo but with a manual boost controller and Greazzer's nifty injectors which I'm still running. I have no clue what the coefficient of drag (cd) is on the Mercedes body but the S10 is .25 (IIRC) according to the Interwebs, basically a brick.
