The problem turned out to be a stuck open EGR valve. Diesels don't like to run on their own exhaust. I "fixed" the problem, and no issues since. My original intent was to swap a 3.0L in it, either a 603.96 or a turbo 606. But this engine runs and drives so well, and I like the torque it makes, so it's a keeper.
Brilliant buy. PO had given up on it assuming bent rods?

Got my '85 under similar circumstances - wouldn't shift into 4th, dealer told PO it needed new a transmission. Turned out to be stuck kick-down switch.

I set the hills ablaze with my Chevy II.

We adjusted the lifters and the left valve cover gasket got twisted in the rear. By the time I crossed the quarter mile mark the car looked like it was dying.

I only lost a quart of oil but it appeared to all have ended up on the JC Penny headers I ran (Appliance). That was the only manufacture of headers for the 66-67 Chevy II.

That's pretty damn fast! The new 2020 C8 does the 1/4 mile just a hair better, right out of the box.
2.6 sec. 0-60 mph is the best time I've seen. Incredible!!!

Regards 5,280 ft? The new Ford GT 6 cyl. presses 200 mph. Another incredible car, right out of the box!

stock 617

Then your stock OM617a is sick. 100 mph is no problem for a healthy example.

Here’s how slow an OM616 is.

Pay attention and let it sink in.

With the second turbo and the Dieselmeken pump I've run a best of 136.2, running 26 PSI boost. When we get to the track post-Covid I'm shooting for 150 with 40 PSI though there will be more than a little tuning to get there.

In stock trim I ran a best of 96 or so with the stock pump and stock turbo but with a manual boost controller and Greazzer's nifty injectors which I'm still running. I have no clue what the coefficient of drag (cd) is on the Mercedes body but the S10 is .25 (IIRC) according to the Interwebs, basically a brick.

Dan
Actually .25 is very good. I'd suspect a Cd closer to .4.

my '79 NA 300d gets to 80 okay

as well as can be expected I guess

but 83-85 seem to be it running flat

I think the specs call for mid 90's top end.

I have it written in my log book which is in the shop and I'm not (I'm recovering from a nasty finger wound from improperly cutting aluminum angle stock on my chop saw - don't do that with the V pointing up). When I get back out there I'll look it up but that's the number that came to mind. I used whatever number it was in Dr. Mayf's calculator for HP derived from speed and it was pretty darn close. BTW - I think those equations are still on Landspeed.com.

Post Top Speed

I don't think these cars were made thinking of them as Hot Rods....

However, before I had the I.P. rebuilt my turbo 617 in my '84 California spec. coupe easily went 125 MPH by GPS, I'm scared to drive fast but I had it up faster once or twice in the Desert late at night on a long flat empty straightaway .

God help you if a coyote runs out in front of you going that fast .

My '82 24D topped out at 83 MPH per the book before I had the I.P. rebuilt , I don't normally thrash my engines like that .

These are excellent cars to drive very quickly, they make wonderful high speed touring cars but if you have the need fo0r speed, skip the old diesels .
