Interesting turbo 240D on craigslist

Here's an interesting ad:

1976 mercedes 240D 115

Quote:

4 cyl. 4 sp. turbo original owner had turbo installed by dealer in 1978 or 9,runs good very minor rust. new seat pads. power windows, sun roof, 3300. calls only
No pics of turbo included, just three exterior photos :(. I'm half-tempted to ask if I can stop by this weekend just to check it out. If I can, I'll be sure to post photos on here. Wonder if it's a Rajay or something else.

It is interesting that the vehicle may have had a turbo since the late 1970s and still runs fine. There have been some threads on here which suggest adding a turbo is guaranteed to make a NA OM616 or OM617 explode due to lack of sodium filled valves or the correct piston oil cooling. It is only one data point, but this vehicle suggests that you can add a turbo to a NA engine and still have many years of use from the vehicle.

[As an aside, can I post in this thread, or is it reserved for PP members with infraction warnings? Oh snap! I probably deserve one for teasing you three.]

It takes them from being as slow as a snail to being as slow as a snail in track shoes according to that article. Still, better for sure - I can see why someone would want to do SOMETHING to get down the road faster.

If you don't have at least 1 infraction from the thought police running this joint, you're not trying hard enough.

It actually broke 60MPH in the quarter-mile with the turbo! LOL

this is an opportunity to stage a race between your turbo 240 and their turbo 240 for supremacy of the world

Watch it buddy! I am very sensitive about my infractions!;)

Is that a Boost/Vacuum gauge in place of the clock in that old advertisement?

That's exactly why I want to see it! I wonder if he has records to show how many miles are on the car.

I also like JB3's idea of a race. Definitely need to do that.
