Quick, simple and cheap method to detect compressor shaft leak?

87 300D is leaking refrigerant and I suspect it is from the compressor. Any quick way to confirm? I use bubble tests on most fittings and found no leak.

Evacuate then charge with Nitrogen + 4 oz of R-22, check with a sniffer?

I am not looking for a professional solution with all the resources. Any other alternative? I may buy a sniffer, any recommendation for under $100?
