Lift pump 617 turbo getting air
I have had this problem for over a year now in that the engine runs rough on a cold start sometimes taking 30-60 sec. to clear up before I can drive if I try to go immediately the car could die out totally if I am not careful like it ran out out of fuel. I am pretty sure it is the lift pump, primer pump area where it is sucking air into the system. I have the new style button pump by bosch previous owner must have installed I have read that there is a copper crush washer in there that is a known leak area if they maybe forgot to install it or it fell off on installation. I have also read that the springs in the lift pump could be weak and not closing. Before I rip this lift pump off I am looking for some advise as to what to look for and what parts would you need if any to rebuild and or clean lift pump. What I did today was look closely at the pump for any signs of leakage it was a little wet on bottom of pump I checked the hose clamps and the one on the input side was a little lose I'm hoping that was the problem. I tightened it up and will check if if it stumbles and starts hard tomorrow if the problem is there yet I will be taking pump off I have 2 other used ones I can put on. The car does seem to finally start if I pump the hand primer 15-20 times. The problem seems to have gotten worse lately as I would have to try to turn over with key about 3 times before car would start problem is only on a cold start after sitting overnight otherwise runs great when warmed up has good power and speed. It looks like to remove the lift pump it is held on by (3) 10 mm nuts one on top 2 on bottom the pump itself has bolt on bottom that is 19mm or 3/4sae. and a big bolt from side that somewhere between 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" or about 30mm a d I guess you could remove the inlet and outlet tubes with a 19mm or 3/4" wrench. So where would I find the valves that might be stuck open and not closing would I need some parts or just a good cleanig?

There is 2 threads on rebuilding the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump.
Also it is not the spring on the Lift Pump that is the issue it is the Spring in the Fuel Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve that if you have one that can be taking apart the spring can be stretched back to a free length of 27mm. If it is the Lift Pump before starting pump a lot on the Hand Primer. If it starts and runs normally after that you either have a leak in the Fuel Supply Hoses, Plastic Filter or the Valves inside of the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump are having issues. A lot of people have had the old style Hand Primer be a source of an air leak but I can't recall anyone having the trouble starting and running you are having. Anyway there is 2 threads that show pics of taking apart the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump for your year and model with pictures. A generic rebuild Kit is available on eBay for what used to be $16.50 and that included shipping. The real Bosch kits go from that price on up to around $30. There is a less expensive Valve Kit but it does not have the tiny 5mm O-ring in it.

Thanks for the reply 911. I do not have a spring in my fuel pressure relief valve as I have an 85 sd but I did have it out and tried another one and there was no change. The car starts a little better after hand priming but not like it should. I did tighten up on the clamp on the in side of the pump and see if that makes a difference in the mornimg if it does not I will take the pump off and read up on the rebuilding of the lift pump put a spare on until I can rebuild this one. I will repost when problem is solved.
