Rubbing Sound Rear End

In the early stages of sorting out my friend's 89 190D. Had it into Firestone for new tires and had them do a safety inspection. Among other observations, they said the brakes were fine although front pads are nearing needing to be replaced. I asked about the calipers in particular and they said they were able to free them up (this is a car that sat for NINE YEARS).

When I got the car back no the road, I hear what to me sounds like something rubbing against something else coming from the rear end when the car is moving. It is constant, not rotational. Not horrifically loud, but definitely there.

Assuming that Firestone is correct (by no means certain), what in the differential, axle, or something else would account for this kind of sound? FYI differential fluid level was fine but I replaced it.

It goes to my mechanic next week for a bunch of stuff so he should be able to figure it out. But I'm curious as to what the possibilities might be so I thought I'd ask.

If it sounds like rubbing it probably is....dust shield bent? ....something dragging on the driveshaft? Look around. YOu'll probably find it.
