I think you will find that almost everyone uses the forum member ROLLGUY: Spring Special- 7 cyl Sanden Compressor Retrofit Kit for 616/617

I found him to have great prices and terrific support after the sale.

Good luck

Several threads here on that adapter you can read. I put one on my 1985 300D and have the original R4 on my 1984. Both cool about the same, the 1984 even slightly better, but I think that is more in the climate controls. I was able to use my original hoses on the Sanden compressor, as did another guy. If your R4 compressor is still working, I would keep using it. A Sanden won't materially improve your life, nor your AC. If your R4 compressor is bad, changing to a Sanden is smart since they are very common for retrofits.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the Sanden compressor actually has lower drag on the engine, combined with higher overall efficiency than the original R4 compressor. Thereby "materially improving" your A/C system and subsequently, your life.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong here.
