Windows dead. WTF??

Greetings gents.

I left the old gal parked for one week and now none of my windows work. Prior to parking it, they all did. The fronts were acceptable and the rears slow. Removing, cleaning and lubing the regulators and checking wiring was already on my to-do list.

Likewise, the sunroof crapped out without warning last month. Up till then it was working fine with no noise and good speed. I tried replacing the swithch and that was a no go. I have purchased a NOS motor for my next attempt. The roof will come out and all fittings will be greased.

There is good V / current to the shift console as the shifter lights work, the right side view mirror works and so do the emergency flashers.

I have yet to check the fuses, but to think that two fuses crapped out at the same time is a stretch. All were replaced with bi-metal fuses in Feb of this year when I bought the car.

I'll check the fuses and pop the console and check for voltage at the switches first. Any other suggestions? A coupe' with windows UP might as well be a sedan. This is a seriously heinous affliction and one which must be remedied quickly.

Just fishing for suggestions before I get cro-mag with it.

1985 300CD in great shape except for this anomaly.

check the fuses... really. i had one simply rattle out, it wasnt even blown or anything. it was the one for the windows.

On my car, there are two window fuses. One for the left front and right rear. The second for the right front and left rear. A double fuse failure from the last time I drove the car strikes me as highly unlikely. None the less, I will check them first.

If fuses are fine , then you window relay can be the problem.

Try holding the window switch down and slamming the door a few times

On the 123 there is a relay for the windows as others have mentioned. It is behind the instrument cluster.
The coil circuit for this relay is fed from fuse 12. If you lose fuse 12 or this relay none of the windows will work.

It is kinda nice none of your windows are working....
thus it is not a window motor..
or an individual console window switch... which is really expensive...

If all of the windows suddenly won't work check the Fuse that goes to the Power Window Relay. On my 84 w123 that is the #12 Fusel.

The #12 Fuse also has some other components that it serves.

Note actually pull the Fuse out and inspect the tips of the Fuse and the seating areas in the Fuse Box as both can corrode.

BAM. This forum is the bomb. I get very little traction on other 123 forums.

I've been busting a$$ all day but will check that window relay fuse tonight.

MANY THANKS!

If it does turn out to be the number 12 fuse, all who pointed me in that direction are welcome to come and spend an entire day by the pool while draining my alcohol cabinet, beer cooler, and humidor at any time which pleases you. Please bring a hot "other". I promise that I will be a gentleman the whole time. oink.

If we had known you were shopping around for a good answer we would have stayed silent.
Sure, invite us to the pool... and not even put which state you live in....
We only have hot ' others' .....

oldmako 05-25-2016 06:28 PM

Hahahah. Nice comeback, and one which I surely deserved.

ALL are welcome.

I don't live in a state. I live in The Commonwealth of Virginia. While I have no idea what a Commonwealth is, I'm fairly well versed on alcohol, beer, humidors and hot others. So, swing by and elevate yourself to a different state.

Sorry for my flippant manner. Several Mint Juleps have gone down the pipes today. It's "check on the efficacy" of the mint" and fix your Coupe' day.

CommonWealth... sounds Socialist ....

Why are you playing on the computer instead of wrapping up your mechanical problem ?

Back to the workshop. We have large bets placed on what the cause is....

oldmako 05-25-2016 08:50 PM

Sounds socialist? Perhaps to a Trump voter. ;)

Virginia, father of 8 US Presidents, 4 of the first 5 in fact, home of both George Mason and James Madison (think "Bill of Rights") and Capitol of the CSA can hardly be considered Socialist. There are 3 others, PA, MA, and KY....bit I digress

Unfortunately, fuse No 12 is just fine. So, I suppose that leaves the relay to check.

Would anyone care to opine on the difficulty of access of said relay and the best place to obtain a replacement? And, why it may have given up the ghost (other than old age)? And, what else should I monkey with while replacing the relay?

Or, absent that, anything of a political nature on technical automotive enthusiasts site?

Good thing my AC is tossing cubes!

leathermang 05-25-2016 08:53 PM

Feeling the Bern here...thus can not rule out old age.

Windows working today. Sweet! Go away Gremlins, go away. B
