Emergency SLS fluid? What to use?

I just noticed a wet spot in front of the right rear wheel and will need to search for the source of the leak. In the mean time I do not want to damage the pump running it without fluid. It's a holiday weekend and the mercedes parts supply store is closed. Is there a back up fluid I can use in an emergency?

Many thanks for the assistance. I tried to search the subject and came up empty handed.

Well stocked parts stores carry Pentosin CHF 11S, which is a good substitute. I know my local NAPA has it.

Tractor Supply should have iso46 as a decent substitute.

Ok... we have ' decent' and ' good ' substitutes....
does that mean ok for ' emergency' as this is AND should be changed out with the filter to the approved MB fluid reasonably soon ?

I used the iso46 for years in our 87td. No problems with the pump or suspension.

I'd use regular Dexron 3 ATF due to it's availability. ( ATF is a very common sub for light hydraulic oil. ) Or AW 46 hydraulic oil for a bit more viscosity. Even power steering fluid would be fine. ( not the stop leak stuff though. )

" ISO 46 " is a viscosity system like XXW-XX is for motor oil.

" AW 46 " ( Anti Wear ) is a designation for industrial hydraulic oil that happens to use the ISO scale . AW can commonly be had 32 46 68 though it can be had in a other grades from 10 to 320.

Iso 46 is on the low side of SAE 20.

The two scales don't quite match up so there is some high / low end of the rating across the range.

ISO Grade Equivalent SAE Grade
22 10
32 10W
46 20
68 20W
100 30
150 40
220 50

While ATF is a bit on the light side at ISO 37 ( if we are using AW 46 as a viscosity equivalent to SLS fluid ) , I would not worry about using it. I'd probably go with regular Dexron 3 and not any sort of synthetic. http://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/A91E6EB4FA471EE980257C23008125A1/$File/ATF%20Dex%20III_467172_2013_10.pdf

If the CHF 11S is available I'd use that over ATF. It's spendy, but a very high quality fluid.

It has been stared on here before NOT to use AW46... Apparently it is different.

ISO46 is much less expensive and at most supply chains.

Generally, " ISO 46 " designates viscosity only not the type of oil. " AW 46 " designates Anti Wear hydraulic oil that is an ISO viscosity of 46.

I did find some references that in Europe ISO is generically used in hydraulic oil descriptions but that is like saying " You need SAE 10W-30 oil " , it is not a complete oil specification.

Others seem to be describing "HY-Trans" or " Universal Tractor Fluid " , this is a higher grade hydraulic fluid designed for wet clutches , brakes , gear trains in farm / construction tractors / equipment.

Look at the link below it has both, now what?

Back in the discussion on manual transmission fluid.... JimSmith , moderator, posted information about some ' seemingly ' identical replacements for the recommended fluid had ingredients which would corrode the synchronizer rings...yikes... He used Redline MTF himself... and so do I....
MB is very specific about what they want used in the SLS system...and they charge big money for that fluid....maybe perfectly good substitutes are readily available .... but a mistake that eats up an inner seal or something like that... would cost a lot of grief..
That is the kind of thing which worries me....' looks ' close, matching up the wrong category of ' specs' ... yikes...
