Black puff of smoke on startup.

I get a black solid puff of smoke on startup, cold as well as hot.

Otherwise it shows no symptoms, runs great (0-60 8.5s), started all winter in -25C without hickups.

My first guess would be that one or more injector is leaking fuel into the cylinder when it sits and then the excess fuel comes out as black smoke. Am I correct?

I tend to use it quite hard so an Italian tune-up I'm quite certain it won't need.

How big of a puff is it? Mine gives a small puff that is only visible if you are in sight of the tail pipe outside the car.

I get an occasional puff at start up and mine runs as well as yours. Are you using any oil?? What is it like under hard acceleration? Probably nothing wrong at all. At least nothing you might want to sink a lot of money into.

According to the measuringsizeofclouds standard it is about the size of a 28" tv floating away

It really doesn't bug me but I figured it might be worth doing an injector service since an injector leaking fuel are likely to have maybe an irregular spray pattern also and that in turn causes a slightly higher fuel consumption.

In other words, it isn't perfect and we all drive Mercedes to be perfect, aren't we?:p
