83 300d using a 84 300d filter

Oops. Ordered a 83 oil filter and got shorter 84 oil filter.. Thought it over and decided what could it hurt. Changed oil and stuck it in. Good ? Bad? Let me know before I begin my 300 d burn outs . Mike

83 and 84 take the same filter. If you got a short one, it is for some other car.

If you put the wrong filter in, you could reduce the needed oil pressure.

I have had an 1981, 1984, and 1985. They have all used the same oil filter.

I looked up the part number again and it is for later model 300d or 190d. Are the filters shorter for those models? the number is 601 180 0009. Mike. I will get a correct filter today. Im still curious since it fits in the canister and appears to be the same except maybe an inch shorter

Similar design but I understand that as the cars got more modern the space under the bonnet / hood was designed to be lower for pedestrian survival rates...

...one of the things due to less height for the engines was a slightly shorter oil filter housing that looks similar to its older cousin.
