It is possible for it to be an Axle but I think it is a good idea to also check the end Ply on the Rear Hub.
You should not be able to feel any in and out end play or side play for that matter.

Are there any ripped boots or leaks (factory axles are filled with liquid lube)?

The boots are old but not cracked. I can slide the axle in and out about 1/2 an inch from the differential to the hub. is that normal? I tried to move the right axle and there was no play at all.
thanks

No, not normal. The clip inside the diff has come out. You will need to remove the diff cover and replace the clip (it may just be in the bottom of the diff), and possibly the shaft seal. You might as well do both while the cover is off.......Rich

if there is actually play of 1/2" from the diff face to the axle stub... yeah that's bad.

hopefully, you can simply pop the diff cover off, (catch the 2 quarts of gear oil) fish around in the bottom with a magnet, and put the clip back on... but I've never seen one pop out on it's own.

thanks Ill pull the diff cover off tomorrow and see if i can find the clip. I dont drive his car very often except when he says dad its not stopping or the engine wont shut off. Then I spend a few days fixing the beast. He really loves the car,I just taught him how to adjust the valves he did ok.

Remember to remove the fill plug (the top one) BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE COVER PLATE!!!

It's pretty hard to put the oil back in

I disagree with other statements, others may be misunderstanding what you are saying.

Your entire 'axle' is not sliding .5 inches. it is just the shaft that is sliding while the housings on the ends where the business happens is staying in place. Is this correct?

This does not suggest you have lost any clips.

More so, it suggests your axles are a bit worn. It will cause a tapping or hammering sound while the wheels are spinning. the rubber boots acting like a spring for each end of each axle.

The axle may work indefinitely, it is not a real cause for concern, but be prepared with reman axles if you plan to conquer it.

Thanks I have come to the same conclusion. I pulled the diff cover off and the clips are fine, that left me with the only other possibility that the axle is worn in the boot. I ordered a new axle from the auto supply shop here and Ill have it tomorrow.

Thank you for all your help
