85 300 td ignition lock cylinder stuck
Steering column locked up and key wouldn't turn, but after a few minutes of jerking the wheel while turning the key, I was able to get it started. I left key in position 2 and used the stop lever on the injection pump to kill the engine. I pulled the lock cylinder using a paperclip.
Dealer quoted me $286 just for the cylinder and new keys. Prices from Peach Parts range from $17 to $175. I don't care if the switch isn't keyed to the doors. The prices range is from ridiculously cheap to outrageously expensive. What's the best way to go on this? Thanks.

Like yourself I didn't care about matching on a vehicle and bought the 2 keys and cylinder from the dealer. It's been probably 5 years ago but it was <$35 (cash and carry).

Dealer cost?
Three months ago I replaced my SDL tumbler. Purchased from the local dealer with matching key (doors, trunk & ignition). Needed registration and ID to order.
Dealer was not sure if the key came with the tumbler so I ordered one. Turned out a key came with the tumbler. So I ended up with two matching keys cut based on the VIN#. I believe the total bill was around $65. I then ordered the ignition switch (electrical) for $45 at the dealer. It was getting sloppy too...kind of a "while I'm there" thing. I'd check back, or around with another dealer. Maybe the rep you spoke with mistakenly looked up the steering lock unit and ignition switch (electrical) component, etc. Re quality....I'd go with MB on this repair 'cause the fall out of an aftermarket unit failure is too steep for me.

I just called the dealership 86-300SDL used, and they quoted me $220. This is for just the tumbler with a key, not keyed to my vin.

The genuine MBZ tumbler with a single key matched to the VIN is actually more expense than the entire lock mechanism with shut off valve. If I remember correctly the price from the classic center is around $180 plus tax and shipping.

Thanks 86-300SDL and everyone. I'll figure something out. For now, needle nose pliers seem to work. Ugh. Just more ammunition for my wife who wants it g.o.n.e. not fixed.

Once the tumbler is removed, the car is easy to start with a wide flat blade screwdriver. In the past 4 years I have replaced the tumblers on 3 of my w123 cars and never found a price less than $180 at the classic center. You can buy an aftermarket tumbler with key for $50, but who knows about the quality? I do have to admit that recently I had a 1 year old genuine MBZ tumbler fail.

My 85 300SD had an aftermarket tumbler. I don't recall the tumbler costing near that much with my 92 or 95 w124s which I had keyed to the VIN. It was in the 100 some odd range? Dealer pricing is very random. Markup is huge and is different from dealer to dealer. Some dealers have very different pricing at their retail counter vs website. However you aren't going to get a keyed tumbler from a website since it gives you a working door key.

Most of the Key and Tumbler info is for W123s. On them some people have only gotten only 1.5 years out of the cheap Lock Tumblers. So there is quality issues.
I had all the symptoms of a Lock Tubler issue and it turned out to be the inside of the Steering Cloum Lock was broken. I put the Lock Tumbler in My Harbor Freight jewlery ultrasonic cleaning tank and cleaned it. Installed the Tumbler on a new Steering Colum Lock and have had zero issues with it since. Steering Colum Lock (Ignition Lock Housing) causes Ignition Switch Failure .
