This is pretty cool. I wonder what speed a 300D would reach.

What other cars were there? At the end of the video I was surprised to see that all the parked cars you were passing seemed to be everyday traffic type vehicles. I expected to see some muscle cars, or something like a Supra with a turbo sticking out of the hood.

The cars you see at the end ARE DD's - those were spectators. There is an unbelievable variety of cars and bikes with something like 600 car/truck classes and 1,000 bike classes. If you go to there's an article in the "front page" with coverage of the meet and you can see lots of pics of some of the competitors including Mutt at speed and shots of the 100 MPH Ford 8N tractor!

The forum edited out BangShift for some reason. They've let me post that in the past. Let's see if this posts w/o the <>

If you got it down to sea level Im sure the 130 mph could be broken ,a good long track here locally to Houston has a few record holders for such attempts.

The track is at about 900' - not too bad. The old track in Maxton, NC was about 100' - about as good as it gets altitude-wise though the track wasn't nearly as nice as this one.

I'll get 130 at the next meet - I have some tweaks left in my bag o' tricks.

A good read Dan ,the c111-III was reaching 200 mph with a turbo 617 and was built to hold 230 hp .I like the way Mercedes engineers think ,they perform tests on a given motor and give it extreme measures for a duration of time to see what breaks ,then build it better. In 1978 ,when the c111-III was going thru its paces on the track Mercedes planners were busy on advertising its accomplishments. In the oncoming new model years that followed Im sure that savey buyers were well aware what this diesel 617 turbo version was all about by the time the dealership showrooms were flooring models.

I was surprised at the changes between the turbo and non-turbo engines. Stuff like piston squirters and other upgrades make a difference. Mine sure has been tough so far - and I'm shifting at about 5200 rpm!

What rpm is your top on the run?

As closely as I could tell, probably 4700 or so. It's hard to read gages at the top of a run - too much other stuff to do - head up, looking down the track, coming to a safe stop. The decel is actually the hard part. At the next meet I'll move the GoPro to the rear main hoop and focus it on the gages - sort of a poor man's data logger.

Sounds like it might pull a slightly lower rear end ratio with safety. Terminal rpm of maybe 5000?

Or if you're really brave add a little propane? I'm sure all those truck guys have loads of tricks you can pull....but maybe the rules would not allow?

Can you add a fastback element to the bed?

No additional fuel - though I'm not clear about water injection. That's a maybe so I'll look into that.

I've done about all the aero improvements I'm allowed though I CAN lower the nose a bit more and that's the plan for the September meet. I'll have to cut the air dam down so it won't hit the track then I can let some air out of the ShockWaves - having adjustable front elevation is VERY helpful. The rules allow a front air dam but NO aero improvements at the rear of the truck and I can't tape the seams, either. Notice that there are no rearview mirrors, antenna, etc. - all that is allowed and is done.

Rather than add rear gear I'll shoot for a bit more HP. I think I can add a bit more boost as long as the EGT doesn't go TOO far off the deep and. The pump can add much more fuel than it's currently set up for but that will take more turbo first.

Back from the track for the (as it turns out) last meet at the Wilmington, Ohio track - we've lost the runway to progress, dern it.

I have a couple of Gopro vids but they're still in the camera so I'll get 'em posted ASAP.

No 130 at Ohio. I did, however, run a 129.60xx so I was close. That was on Friday and we had a 15+ headwind for the rest of the weekend so nobody went as fast as usual. I ran some 125, 126, 127 ish runs into the wind. I then did a class change to E/DT ("E" is the next bigger engine class and we're allowed to run up in engine class) and I ran a 128+ to reset that record. I have to apologize to Steve M (Salty Frog Racing) for taking one of his records. If he'd been there I'd have asked him but it was the last chance to post records in Ohio so I kinda had to go for it. Sorry Steve.........

I don't know if I have the fastest OM617 in North America or not - what do y'all think?

Dan

OK! Back from our new track in Blytheville, Arkansas. It's an old SAC base with over 11,000 feet of pretty good pavement and an elevation of something like 285 feet (I don't remember numbers well but it's something like that).

The April meet had terrible weather (cold, rainy, and windy) but we did get in some runs. I used this as an opportunity to get Mutt out of mothballs and see if the new turbo was going to work OK, not leak oil, etc. Running at 20 PSI boost I pretty much replicated my best speeds at Ohio with a 126.6 (the new folks running the track are only reporting speeds to 1 digit) with bad winds so I was good with that.

Now onto June - 136.2!!!!!!! That was with 25 PSI boost. The EGT's dropped to 1050ish at the end of the track, down from 1160 or so. All in all, Mutt LOVES more boost! So I'll add another 5 PSI (maybe more) for the next meet. 140 is looking like a real possibility.

"Fastest" is subjective- top speed? 0-30? 0-60? 0-100? 1/4 mile?
