96 w210 e300 fuel tank supply and return access

I understand the 210 diesels use the same in tank filter as all of the old diesels do. I did the job on my old w124. Is the tank similarly accessible underneath with the 210 or am I going to have to remove anything to get access. I have fuel leaks to resolve. Fuel seems to be leaking out one of the drain pipes in the rear passenger side. Any gotchas before I get her up on jack stands to have a look?

Open the fuel flap and you will see a rubber hose in the right hand corner, this lets rain water drain out via a hose that runs down under the car. Now my w124 had a metal fitting and a hose connected to this and then to a metal tube that ran through the trunk floor and another short length of hose that terminated up near the inboard bushing on the lower suspension arm.
Now my w210 just seems to have a rubber hose that fits the hole and sits a bit proud of it,I have not looked to see if it has any connection through the trunk floor but looking at the cost saving affair at the top end I expect it doesnt .
So its possible your filler cap weeps fuel due to a poor fitting rubber gasket and its running diwn this pipe.

That makes a lot of sense! Thank you. I'm still going to replace the rubber hoses since they do degrade and are 20 years old

I don't believe the cap is leaking. I'll have to get under the car and have a look. Is there a tank breather to stop a vacuum or too much pressure or is all the breathing down via the cap?
